    1. [NJHUDSON] Gen. Soc. Meeting Mon. Sept. 22
    2. Guests are invited to attend the Genealogical Society of Bergen County (GSBC)?meeting on Monday, September 22, 2008 at 7pm.? Meetings are held in the?Auditorium?at the Ridgewood Public Library on North Maple Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ.? Following a brief business meeting, our?evening's presenter, David Kleiman, will deliver?his very successful presentation which he first?introduced to the NY DAR in January 2008.? Topic: "Local Farmer -> American Patriots -> Royal Lineage" David Kleiman, will present a case study of an actual genealogical project from the initial family interview to web searches (both standard and specialized web pages) to site visits in the towns and counties where the family resided.? Follow the work flow (using computers all the way) from choosing a database to outwitting the state archives on-line database to retrieve valuable information.? We started from the question: "is this family legend true or false?" and wound up with a genealogical line that reflects the origins of religious tolerance in colonial US and even an earlier Royal surprise!?? There is no fee to attend this program.? Light refreshments available.? If you have any questions/concerns, please email me directly at Burgenlaenderin@aol.com Margaret Kaiser GSBC Program Chair

    2. I would like to announce a new database and lookup for Dickinson High School yearbooks. If you had a family member who attended Dickinson High School, you will want to check this out. My only request is to send only one request at a time to my newest look-up volunteer. He has created a database of almost 12,000 names from many yearbooks. You can send a request to Karl, who will scan a copy of the photo, if one is in the yearbook. This is newly posted on the front page of the Hudson County, NJGenWeb page. A link will take you to the lookup page, where you will find a link to the index. To write Karl for a photo scan, go back to the Lookup page and click on Karl's name. Be sure to include the name of the individual and the proper yearbook in which the person's name is cited. Please be sure to have the right information so Karl doesn't have to search for the correct year. Thanks, and I hope you enjoy. Sorry for the delayed reply. I am currently off the lists and at my summer beach place .... and I don't check my mail as often. The link and/or the photo does not appear in this mail. Would you please send it again?   I have a James McCarthy who ...to the best of my knowledge lived in Philadelphia then drifted to Jersey and New York and who knows where. I have a photo of him during 1890... he looks about 30 yrs old.  I am not aware of any Shanahans at this time.   Now the photo you refer to may well be his father, who was also James and I would like to see if there is a resemblence.  Long shot .... if the person whp has the photo could scan it and send it to me (I'm in Mexico), that would be great! C. SHANAHAN" on the back of the photograph as if the photograph was a gift to this person. I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of his family.  If you are a member of this MCCARTHY Family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. 3. The records are in books, nothing has been microfilm. You will find the place filled with law clerks doing title searches. They can be very helpful. Business records are also at the county office. Which office I'm not sure. You can probably find it on the website. The NJ archives have records of businesses with registered names. They also have wills through 1952 which could be useful when researching a family business. 3. Hi all, I have hit a brick wall in my search for my g-grandfather, Peter Lyons.? He came on the ship Neptune arriving on May 19, 1864.? He was 16 years old at the time.? He was naturalized in Jersey City in 1868 and his naturalization papers were signed by a Charles Lyons. I went to the Jersey City Library and found him listed in the 1867 directory as a laborer for Charles Lyons, junk dealer, at the corner of Bay & Prospect.? He is not listed in the 1869 - 1871 directories, which leaves me at a dsead end.? Charles is listed in the 1870 directory as a laborer living at 342 S. 8th St. His wife, Ellen Christie Lyons, records her son's birth (my grandfather, Thomas Lyons) as Nov. 6, 1875 in Jersey City. My question is, could parts of Jersey City been broken up into other cities around that time so that marriages and births would be listed in another municipality which, at the time, was considered Jersey City? Any help would be greatly appreciated.? Until I can locate him & any possible family members in NJ, I can't find out anything about where they came from in Ireland. Thanks, Betty Pruzinsky
