I have been following your discussion about Louis Tiffany with interest. I have been researching recently where Louis Tiffany had lived in Jersey City between 1884-1900. The reason is because one of my 85 year-old relatives has told me that living next door to my GGF sometime between the years indicated above was a "famous jewler", and that this famous jewler either resided, or rented a room next to my GGF, while running his business in NYC. After mentioning "Tiffany's" to her, she said yes. Anyway, we believe this famous jewler either lived on, or rented a room on Palisade Avenue, near the "100 steps" leading down to Hoboken. Since I could not find a Tiffany on any census on Palisade Ave, I have to assume him rented a room at 354, 357, 358, or 361 Palisade Ave. Dave --- On Mon, 12/1/08, MIKE MCHENRY <maurmike1@verizon.net> wrote: > From: MIKE MCHENRY <maurmike1@verizon.net> > Subject: Re: [NJHUDSON] Joseph Briggs/Louis Tiffany > To: njhudson@rootsweb.com > Date: Monday, December 1, 2008, 5:39 AM > I don't see much possibility of an earlier home. That's a fine museum in Winter Park, FL, and I wouldn't doubt their attribution for a minute! Perhaps they could tell you more about the Briggs House. It might have been an earlier home. The Wood-Bridge home in the 1930 census might have been a new home out in the country after 2-3-4 generations had lived in a family home in Jersey City. Earlier generations of the family might have worked in glass or collected the glass of noted glassmakers. My second great-grandparents home in Union City is currently on the market. Probably built in the 1860s or earlier by the German carpenter immigrants, brothers across the street from one another, who moved out to the country from Jersey City. I'm so grateful to the cousin who sent the online listing! Karen, Joseph Briggs built and owned a house in Wood-Ridge, Bergen County, New Jersey. He is listed there in the 1930 Federal Census on Ancestry.com. There also appears a World War I draft registration card for him, reflecting his date of birth as December 11, 1872. Mr. Briggs died in a New York hospital on March 30, 1938 only five years after the death of Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1933. I doubt that there was a Briggs House in Jersey City, but this may be a point of further research. Regards, Beverly G. Karen, I am working from a webtv, most things I cannot open. If you go to google.com and put in: j. briggs of new jersey tiffany glass the first thing that came up said Joseph Briggs House. This may have the information you want. I can't get into it. Marge
Hi Mike, Thanks so much for responding to my query! As far as I can tell, Briggs lived 1873-1938. I think Tiffany died around 1948. I asked my brother if he ever heard of the house, but he said no. And brother is a great fan of Tiffany's art. It's a mystery. Am looking to see if there is a burial location for Dora Osbahr. In 1900, she was living in Bayonne Ward 5, according to the census. She is shown as being born in 1826 in Germany and is a widow. Her husband was Henry also born 1826, according to 1880 census data.

One additional note NJ archives BMD records after 1878 has them but does not own them. The dept. of Health does. Because of they cannot search them for you. http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/webcat/queries/sehealt2.html You must get a NJ list member to do it or hire a private researcher. I have done many post 1878 searches at the archives and your window of 5 years is not difficult. If I had plans to go soon I would do it for you. I'm an hour from Trenton. The alternative is the dept. of health which takes forever. Am looking for Henry and his family in/on the 1870 census. On the 1860 census, they were living in Bergen and the family was composed of Henry age 37, born Hesse, wife Davity age 33 born Hesse and son William b 1855 born New Jersey. Henry and Davity may have had more children.
