    3. Hi, The Annals of the Vreeland Family by Louis Beach Vreeland (note spelling) is not that widely held by libraries - only 14 show up in WorldCat, the principle multi-library catalog. You can see the record at http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/2650881&tab=holdings. Close to Hudson County it is only held by the NYPL at the research branch (the one with the lions), and at Rutgers in New Brunswick. The Jersey City library does not have a copy of this, though they do have a copy of the 1909 Vreeland book by Nicholas Garretson Vreeland. For general historical reference, the Winfield book is a great resource, especially for the colonial period but also for the early organization of the towns in the 19th century. It is a fairly compact work with great depth of research, engagingly written, and with interesting anecdotes included in the footnotes. For the genealogist, in addition to the historical background, there is 140 pages of detailed genealogies of colonial families, including 9 generations of the Vreelands from 1639 to 1872. The drawback to the book is a lack of a detailed name index, but one was created by Jerri Burket and published by Bergen Historic Books and Higginson Book Company in the mid 1990s. The Jersey City library has a copy of the index (as well as the book). 2. Regarding the 1930 police records, you should be able to make an formal request for them under the OPRA laws. There should be a form, usually submitted to the city administrator's office, and they still have the right to redact portions of personnel matters that might still apply, but not the information contained in the actual, formal police report. However, given the age of the records, they'd not have a leg to stand on if you made a formal legal request - they have to give you the information. I have never tried this tactic for genealogical research, but I have done this for informational purposes, and most locales are pretty compliant, since it's Federal and State law that they have to furnish information. Good luck! **************New year...new news. Be the first to know what is making headlines. (http://www.aol.com/?ncid=emlcntaolcom00000026)

    3. Sometimes you just get lucky. Some years ago I called the JCPD 5th precinct, to see if there were any records for my grand uncle Robert Hay. They connected me with the personel records dept. and A nice woman named Fannie took my info. About a week later I received copies of four documents. Two concerned his application for retirement, one was his application to the Firemen's and Policemen's Pension Fund, and the last was an index card, with his name, rank, badge #, dob, dod, and date of retirement. He was appointed in 1920 and retired in 1947. The pension app. also gave family info, marital status, date of marriage, wife's name and DOB, # of children their age & sex. This app. was to be returned to the office of the Secretary Rm. 55 City Hall JC, NJ. I'd try calling the precinct your ancestor worked in, on various days & times to see if you find a sympathetic ear who may assist you. I'd do some checking with the main Library in JC and the archives in Trenton in case the records were recently transfered. Hope this helps you in your search. 3. Mike, I called the Hoboken PD 3 weeks ago and they read me the riot act about releasing these records to me. They could not, but speaking with one of my best friends who is a county sheriff, he said it IS possible to get them under certain circumstances. Not knowing how much research you have done, I would recommend getting the death certificate from the NJ Archives, and getting any newspaper story from the Jersey City Free Public Library. My dad's family is from jersey city. What is the surname you are seeking? 3. Genealogy is many things to many people. You and I sort of fall in the category I call 'purists' for lack of a better word. We want to have as much proof as possible. Other people are happy just to collect names. I started my research in the late 1960s (to put it in perspective the 1900 census had not yet been released to the public). I would kill to know where some of the information in One World Tree originated. But, then, I would kill to know where some of the notes I took in those early years originated. I can tell from my writing how excited I was to find the information but I had not yet understood the importance of citing my reference. Nice thing about genealogy is that it is different for each person. So the best we can do is each of us set the rules for ourselves. I use the notes section of my genealogy program to enter information that may or may not be correct. I site the source and put a note "more research is needed to verify".
