My parents' wedding reception was at the Top Hat in 1945. It was demolished in the 1950s. When I was a child we'd go to the Sears across the street and my mom would point out where the catering hall had been. Lauren Maehrlein Maehrlein's Heirlines Plant a tree, then start your family tree!!

Tom, The park with the stone animals is on the northwest corner of the Blvd and Manhattan Ave in Jersey City. Still there. I remember at one point some idiot got an idea & painted the animals (maybe to cover graffetti??) Ugly!! They looked better in their natural gray color. That park is well north of the Square. I just checked an Archdiocese of Newark site http://www.rcan.org/history/parishchronolist.htm It seems that St Michael's & St Joseph's in Union City merged in 1983, don't know which one 'survived'. >From another page of the Archdiocese site, I found: SS. Hi, I just talked to my dad on the phone about this question. He grew up on 38th street down near Tonnelle. 38th Street at that time was Elm Pl. He seems to think 33rd street didn't go all the way down the hill because at the time Schuetzen Park was there and then down below that was Givernaud Orphanage. Would it be that 33rd street would be in that small section between Kennedy Blvd and Union Tpke? St. Michael's, built by my second great-grandfather and his carpenter sons, became a Korean Church -- we were there in the 1980s and were told the entire monastary property was to become condos -- St. Joseph's survived and has a nice web site, last I knew. Hi All Thanks for the help and hints with street numbers in North Bergen. It appears that if 33rd street were still extant than it wouldn't have had its number changed. So, it does look (like Ann said) that it was taken for the park. I guess I'll have to investigate further... Regards, Joan Joan M. Lowry mailto:jmlowry@earthlink.net

Joan, The magic number is 44. What was 33rd St in the 1930's is now 77th St. I believe the street numbering changes took place during the 1940's. I don't know if the house numbers changed in North Bergen at that time, but in Guttenberg, on 24-26th St (now 68-70th St), they did not. I sent this earlier but I didn't get a copy, possibly it wasn't transmitted. Ann Floreda and Joan: I lived in North Bergen and my original house number was 154 Union Place then that became 1454 - 37th Street NB. Hope that helps. Ann In a message dated 3/23/2009 7:49:48 A.M. Can anyone tell me what the current street number would be for what was - in 1930 - 33rd Street in North Bergen? As I recall there is a simple way to figure it out if one can remember what number to add to the old address... Also, does anyone know for sure if the house numbers would have changed at the same time or if they would have stayed the same? Many thanks! Regards, Joan Joan M. Lowry mailto:jmlowry@earthlink.net
