Sure, If you sign in and on mine it has quick links.. One of them is Immigration and Emigration. If you click on that then scroll all the way down to the bottom where it says "Go Directly to a Specific Title or Collection." Under that in Immigration and Emigration it lists U.S. Passport Applications.. I thought the same thing for my GGM immigrating from Poland. I initially checked Hudson County records and confirmed she was listed on my GGF records. Then someone recommend that I do a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request to the district. The more information you can supply them the better your chances. David, Your quest is a common one for many of us. But, especially for a woman, there are very few records, and the time frame matters in what might be found. Passenger lists - Early ones only have name, age, country of origin, maybe occupation. They expanded over time, adding more info along the way, including physical description. Your relative is too early for much info. Naturallization - Early records for couples, all done under the man's info, with wife and any children added as an almost after thought. Once women got the vote, they got their own paperwork, even if married. That didn't happen until the 1920's. I have records for my grandparents (1910/1911) No pictures. His brother & wife, in the early 1920's each with own petition, again no pictures. Dying in 1911, again, too late for what you're looking for. Driver's license?? First, there were very few cars around in 1911. And, I'm sure that 99.99 percent were driven by men! I had a granduncle who died in Dec 1913 in NYC after being struck by a motor vehicle. My first thought was how the heck did this happen, since there weren't that many around? Horse-drawn wagons, etc were still very popular. I vaguely remembering finding out that in the entire city of NY, there were less than 14,000 registered motorized vehicles (cars, trucks, etc) My relatives in JC, into the 1930's at least, walked almost everywhere, with an occasional trolley ride or bus ride, going into NYC on what is now known as the PATH. I've got grandparents & one couple of great grandparents, that I'm lucky enough to have a photo, in their later years. Nothing from their youth. Photos were a luxury that wasn't in the budget, I guess. Military records, for men, can be helpful if they exist. The WWI & old man's WWII draft registration can be a treasure, even if they didn't serve. Cheer up, Out of 4 pairs of greatgrandparents, I have one photo. Two pairs, my father's side, stayed in Ireland, so nothing. And, my mother's father's parents, nothing. He died in 1907, she died in early 1930's. They came over in the late 1860;s from somewhere in Ireland, with VERY common names so I haven't even pinned down the passenger lists, and the lists didn't have much back then anyway. I've basically resigned myself to accept things as they are. If something ever turns up, I'll embrace it, but I have no hopes of that happening. 8v( Happy searching, Maureen On 4/20/09, David Stroebel <davidstroebel@yahoo.com> wrote: > > My GGM lived in Jersey City from 1883 to 1911. With reference to the fourth paragraph, but we have lots of photos of the West Hoboken Germans (none of whom served in the Civil War, interestingly). I've wondered for years why none of the Boves served. Maybe they pretended they didn't understand English. They were in the US earlier than my Irish who, of course, arrived speaking English and had a leg up on everyone. My other Germans, the Gansbergs, didn't arrive in Jersey City until 1866, just after the Civil War --- but the Boves were in the US in 1851. They were good people, certainly. One son was a priest and my great-grandfather would have been young -- he was born after they arrived in 1851 -- but Johann would have been the right age and the eldest, Georg Friedrich would have been about 36-37, with a lot of kids, when the war started. --- On Mon, 4/20/09, AnnWicki@aol.com <AnnWicki@aol.com> wrote: From: AnnWicki@aol.com <AnnWicki@aol.com> Subject: Re: [NJHUDSON] Documents w/ Persons Description on it? Yes, Jeanne. The hudson county clerk's office told me that and that is why only my GGF had papers on file and not his wife or three children. Dave The city directories will have the associations and clubs. Around that time Hoboken's ethnic makeup was mostly German. You'll find several German assoc. and clubs in Jersey City and Hoboken at that time. The Mormons have the films of the directories. Hi, Well, you may have luck with Ellis Island records. The passenger records sometimes told of the looks of an individual. Also, you may wish to see if you relative applied for a passport. Passport records are searchable on Ancestry.com. Passport records list everything sometimes even a photo. The only one I know of would be a passport document and would only apply if they HAD a passport. If the ancestor is male you may get that info from the draft cards for WWI and WWII. Other than that, I know of no other document. Liz On Mon, Apr 20, 2009 at 11:33 AM, <Lindabr25@aol.com> wrote: > > Hi, > I have the same question about my GGM from an Irish family. OOPS! In my haste to get the word out, I omitted the date of the bus tour. It is saturday, May 9th. SORRY!
LOST CEMETERIES LECTURE AND BUS TOUR The Hudson County Genealogical Society and The Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy, in celebration of Preservation Month 2009, will co-sponsor a lecture and bus tour entitles “The Lost Cemeteries of Hudson County.” The event will begin with a lecture by historians Richard Veit and Mark Nonestied entitled “Stranger Stop and Cast and Eye,” an informative lecture on the last four hundred years of New Jersey cemetery and tombstone design. Richard and Mark are the authors of the recently published “New Jersey Cemeteries and Tombstones: History in the Landscape.” They will discuss the evolution of burial sites and grave markers from the seventeenth century to the dawn of the twenty-first century. Such topics as colonial gravestones, stone carvers, Victorian cemeteries, monuments, mausoleums, and ethnic and cultural burial grounds will be discussed. The lecture will be held in the Panasonic Room of the Secaucus Public Library, at 1379 Paterson Plank Road, (www.secaucus.bccls.org) and will start promptly at 10:00 am. The meeting will be followed by a bus tour of four of Hudson County cemeteries in different stages of the histories: Hudson County Cemetery, or Snake Hill Cemetery, which has ceased to exist and has been replaced by a New Jersey Turnpike Exit; Speer Cemetery, which has been abandoned for over one hundred years and sits forlornly in the middle of Jersey City; Old Bergen Reformed Church Cemetery, which sits across from Speer and hold some of the earliest Hudson Count residents including Jane Tuers, a heroine of the American Revolution; and Historic Jersey City-Harsimus Cemetery which, if not for a dedicated band of local activists, would likely follow the same path as other forgotten cemeteries. The tour starts first at the Secaucus Library and then everyone will drive to Snake Hill to park and where buses will pick up tourists. Cost is $5.00 for HCGS members, $10.00 for others to defray the cost of the meeting and buses. Checks made out to Hudson County Genealogical Society may be mailed, by May 4, to HCGS, 135 Irving Street, Jersey City, NJ 07307. Go to the HCGS website, www.hudsoncountynjgenealogy.org, and fill out the registration form if you are planning to attend. Reservation box is on the right side of the home page.
