Thousands of commuters come into the area via the PATH because of he redevelopment of the Montgomery Street and riverfront areas, and if you re willing to take the walk from the PATH station, leave your car at home nd do it without fear. 3. The resident parking regulations are in effect Mon-Fri, 9AM to 5PM. There are no restrictions on street parking evenings and weekends - such as the Saturdays when HCGS meets. The parking passes for non-residents can now be signed for in the NJ Room, not at the business office. The area around the Main library, where the NJ Room is located, is very safe, especially during the hours the library is open. While there are parts of Jersey City that are subject to the same socioeconomic pressures that drive up crime rates, the downtown areas have seen substantial community reinvestment over the past many years, with the rise in safety (and housing prices!) that entails. 2. Thanks Joel, this is the directions I was looking for.  Thank you to everyone else who responded.  How safe is it to walk from the station to the library?  I'm not familiar with Jersey City only what I've seen and heard on the news.  My son use to work for Home Depot here in Hamilton, and once he had to take the company truck to pick up a stove in Jersey City from someone who wanted to return it.  He was a little lost and stopped at the police station and they told him this is a unsafe place to be riding in and to leave as soon as possible.  So I'm a little nervous about it. Rochelle  -----Original Message----- From: NOMISLEOJ@aol.com To: njhudson@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri, 29 May 2009 10:45 pm Subject: [NJHUDSON] Take mass transit to the Jersey City Library Dear Rochelle, It is very easy to get to the Jersey City Library from Hamilton NJ by rain. By all means, unless you absolutely cannot walk two long blocks and hree short blocks to the library, leave your car at the Hamilton Station nd take the NJT train to Newark. At Newark, change to the PATH train (may e right across the platform). Newark is the end of the line, so take any ATH train three stops (pass Harrison and Journal Square) to Grove Street. When you exit the station ask someone to point you towards City Hall three short blocks south on Grove Street). Turn right (west) on Montgomery treet. Walk two long blocks on Montgome ry Street (Van Vorst Park is along he second block) to Jersey Avenue. The library is on the northeast corner, ith the entrance on Jersey Avenue. Once in the library, you will want to visit the rest rooms on the irst floor, as they are the only public rest rooms in the building. Then you ill probably want to go the New Jersey Room on the third floor, or perhaps ook at old newspapers (Jersey Journal, Hudson Dispatch, Jersey Observer, tc.) on microfilm in the Reference Room on the second floor. Take the rand staircase, or board the ancient elevator if a lot of steps are a chore. y the way, while in the library, be sure to visit the used book store in he Circulation Dept. on the second floor (softbound 50 cents or hardbound or $1). The staff throughout the library are extremely kind and helpful. heck the library's web site for more information. After your visit, retrace your steps to the Grove Street PATH station. Although there is only one platform, there are a variety of trains there. Be sure to board a train going directly back to Newark (skip the trains nding at Journal Square as you will have to change there to the Newark rain anyhow). Obviously, these directions will work for anyone coming by rain from other points in New Jersey on a line stopping at Newark. Genealogically yours, Joel R. 3. By all means get a parking pass...I still own Jersey City for the parking ticket from 2005. I did get a pass the next day. I got there using Mapquest, easier and better because you get a picture! The most important thing is the information to park on the street and go right into the business office to get an all-day parking permit and return to your car and place the permit in the window so you don't get towed or ticketed!!! 3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Eddie TURNER which was taken at the S. Fichtel Studio in Hoboken, New Jersey. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Eddie likely in his teens at the time. In addition to his name, someone has written "Ina's cousin" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I was able to locate only one possible match: Edward TURNER b. 9 Mar 1877 in Jersey City, NJ to parents Edward TURNER and Mary CONNELLY I'm hoping to locate someone from Eddie's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
