Kathy, Unfortunately that is one of the problems with genealogy. Most people are in the same boat as you when it comes to ages. A few points I have found Census records: Depending on whom was home when the census taker arrived at the door. They (the person home) knew their age but could have guessed the spouse, or purposely change it to make them younger (still done today) Passengers Records: Age of passengers I have found almost never to be correct, persons not always spoke the language at the ship and the Purser took a guess (same as spelling the last name) Death records: Again who signed as witness, if an immediate family member signed as wittiness you have a better chance of being correct than a non direct family member, including a spouse. (My g-grandfather witnessed his younger brother's death in 1909 and the age agreed with his Irish birth records from 1862, But when my G-Grandfather died his wife signed as witness and missed the date by 9 years, making him younger. This I have been told may be for insurance reasons back in the early 1900s. Why I have no clue Wedding records seam to be exact and I usually have good luck with them. Child's birth records when related to the mother's age I have found to vary with each child, they always get younger, I wonder why? Help!!! I spent yesterday at the National Archives in New York on Varick St looking at the 1920 census report for my Great Grandfather, Patrick Casserly who lived at 186 7th st. Jeresy City , N.J. They listed his age as the same as his wife Catherine (Carley) (50) which my aunt says is wrong, that he was older than her.so, I went to Morristown Library in Morristown, NJ today to see what I could find...they have the Morman Church Records there also....I found Jersey City directories and got lots of info such as state census records and federal records...My problem is that that alot of the dates for how old the family members are all different and I dont know what to believe! (and so, I am totally confused!) Please help as I am new to this process..Kathy Casserly DeCecco
Thanks to all who wrote giving me information on the Franciscan Order and possible churches to try! What a wonderful group of people you are! Cathy

Cathy, Type in Franciscan Third Order Up come AOL search, scroll down a bit to 99%Franciscan Third Order, click, you're into their website. Looks like it has lots of information. Your ancestor was a member of the Third Order, and as such, was entitled to be buried in the Franciscan habit. Theresa
Cathy, Your g-mother probably belonged to the Franciscan Order as did mine and her sisters. As I recall, the women pledged to say the rosary and I seem to remember that it had an extra decade in it. Also, as you say, they were buried in the monk's robes. I think it was based in St. Joseph's in Paterson as we used to drive her out there for meetings. Don't know the address, but you may try to find out where the order's main house is and contacting them for more information. Good luck! Kathy in Virginia

Can someone help? I have a last picture of my g-grandmother dressed in a nun's habit, and written on the back is "After death clothing, burial - Franciscan Order." This would have been in 1949. She was Polish, lived in the Kearny area, and supposedly belonged to a prayer group which entitled her to be buried in this clothing. Does someone know which church she might have been affiliated with? Thanks a million! Cathy

I have a picture of Mrs. Aleta Craft and one of Miss Sarah Schenck. of Hoboken, N.J. circa 1913. I think they are sisters to my g grandmother Mary Elizabeth Morris b.N.J. 1828 to Joseph Morris and Sarah Hilliard Morris. I think Joseph Morris died early and they may only be half sisters. Mary Elizabeth married Rufus Copeland Crawford from Warren, Maine and they went to California with the gold rush. They have quite an extensive family here in California, and we would like to know more about or our eastern relatives. I have recently found she had a brother John Morris too, but that family does not know any more. Joseph Morris's parents were Asher Morris and Elizabeth Herbert. Sarah Hilliard Morris's parents were Lawrence Hillyer and Sarah Suydam. These records are from the family Bible. Thanks to anyone who can give us a clue. Fern Crawford Whiteley

Hi List, I have a friend coming up to NJ from FL. She is a member of the DAR and had read in one of their newsletters about "Rockingham", the final headquarters of the American Revolution. It supposedly is someplace in NJ. Has anyone heard of it and if so, where is it located? Also, are there any DAR "houses" here in North NJ. Thanks for any help. Gail B.
