The Bunnell Funeral Home that I was familiar with was located on Highland Ave. in Jersey City. They were in business in March of 1989 when they handled the services for my great-grandmother. I tried searching the internet for a recent address and I found no listing. At that time of March 1989, the last surviving member of the family was semi retired and there was a guy named Charlie handling the affairs. Davy
Hi! I used to be on this mailing list, then took a break for about a year, and now am back again so I thought I'd post again. Does anyone have any memories of Mc Hughs living in Jersey City? I am trying to find descendents of two sons of my grandfather's brother John Mc Hugh and his wife Catherine Golding. One son was Michael "Early" Mc Hugh born abt 1914 (d. 1991 but not in NJ) and the other was John J. Mc Hugh born 1920. They lived on Oak St. in 1920. John Sr. died in 1958. Their sisters were Anna ( m. Burger), Veronica (m. Reynolds, then Crane) and Margaret (m. Curreri) Do any of these names ring a bell with anyone? Thank you, Chris Smith

Does anyone know if Bunnell Funeral home in Jersey City is still in existence, and if not, who has the records, or if it changed names, what is it now called? Generations of our family were buried from there. Thanks Susan

Ken Hi. I had family living in Arlington in the eairly 1900's . When I was at the Kearny Library I made copies from the following directories--- 1903-1911-1915-1917-1920-1926-1927-1928-1938-1940-1942-1944 The early ones were at the other end ( same side) of the room in envelopes because of there bad condition. Thanks, George. I'll have to look for the years 1903 and 1911 next time. I was there for several days last May, and I didn't know of their existence. By the way, they also have the following years: 1913 - 1924 - 1929 - 1946 - 1950 - 1952 - 1954 - 1956 - 1958 - 1960 - 1964 - 1966 - 1969 I have copies of the East Newark Officials from each of these years and those you cite below. Would someone give me information as to where I would send for the marriage licenses/records for someone from 1893-1898? It was most likely in Jersey City. The NJ Vital Records site does not seem to have information on marriages for those dates in reference to (Archives Section, Division of Archives and Records Management, Department of State.) Thanks in advance. Jane in California
In perusing some old Jersey City Directories, from the 1880-1900 period, I have come across several relatives listed as "clerks" and "inspectors." Can anyone tell me what these job titles might have entailed during that period? On another note, I will be temporarily unsubscribing from this list as I am going on a two week vacation and do not want to come home to several thousand unread e-mails! So if you are going to answer this message, please do it today or send it to my personal address below and not to the list. The earliest city directory that the Kearny Library has in store is the year 1913. You have to go to the Newark Library to get the years 1907, 1909, and 1911. I heard that NJ did State census for "mid-years", like 1895. Does anybody know if NJ did a State census for 1905? The reason I am looking is that I found my wife's GGrandfather, James F. CASEY, in the 1900 census on Mountain Road in West Hoboken. He was also in a 1902-1903 directory for West Hoboken. However, when I found a 1910 directory, I found that his wife (Alica) had moved and was listed as "widow". I am trying to find out a better date for his death, however I do not have directories or a census for the years 1903-1910 Thank you! Tom Novak

Your Cousin may have been referring to State Census as opposed to Federal. Some states (NY and NJ included) took a State Census, usually on the 5 years between the Federal. These can be very valuable, as some are more detailed than the Federal, also the 1885 and 1895 can fill in gaps from the missing 1890 Federal.
