Hello to all About a week ago I was cleaning up my machine, and trying to deal with some other problems with my machine. Well the bad new is I lost ALL my mail, and Contacts, I had to start all over I am real upset about that since I had years of research work and genealogy work in email folder, some I went through and some not. I lost my address book too , so if any of you out there know me, or have email me stuff, or we were in contact with each other, Please send me an email so that I may have you address again, and put it in my new address book Thank Dennis
While I know that most people on this list know the following, I'm posting it because someone asked me how I got my grandfather's Naturalization papers and I lost the message before I could answer. Let me begin by saying that I had the actual certificate issued by the court on the day he was sworn in, so I knew the exact date to look for. I suspect that is why it only took 5 mos. Anyway, I sent a letter to the Hudson County Clerk, 959 Newark Avenue, Jersey City, NY 07306 giving the date and asking how I could get a copy of the application. When I didn't hear anything for about 6 wks, I called and got a very nice man, Henry, who promised to look for my letter. As he suggested, I called him back the next day. He said he had found it and would 'get back to me when they weren't so busy.' About two weeks ago, I got a letter requesting a money order for $7.50 -- search fee plus 3 copies. I sent it off and, lo, the papers came yesterday. The actual signature on the form asking for the money order was Sidney W. King, Jr, Supervisor/Passport Office. I would assume that it would be quicker to address the letter to him directly rather than to the County Clerk. But I also assume that I might still be waiting if I hadn't had an exact date as Henry said that helped them find it. Someone on this list told me that I could order a film of Hudson Cty. Naturalization records at the FHS. I don't remember the film #, but perhaps someone else could post that. Interestingly, I sent return envelopes both times and they didn't use them. Marion
Hi, I'm back on this list after finally getting a copy of the Naturalization Application of my gr-grandfather, John Dammann, Naturalized in Hudson Cty. in 1856 in the Court of North Bergen. It helps -- and also raises questions. He apparently lived in NYC until 1855, then moved to NJ. Would it be likely that he lived in N. Bergen, or would that just happen to be where he was sworn in. I'm a little hazy about my NJ geography but family lore says that he could stand on the bank of the river and hear the bells chiming from the famous church in Lower Manhattan -- the North Church? Where might that locate him? Newark? Does anyone have access to the 1860 census and could look up either a John or Sophie Dammann? I know he died while my grandfather was still a child, so he might not still have been alive in 1860. Also, now that I know he lived in Hudson Cty., could anyone suggest a cemetery where he might be buried? I don't know whether he was Catholic or Lutheran. A lot of questions and, I hope, some of you can give me some answers. Thanks in advance, Marion Markham in Illinois

Hi List: I recently received information that my great grandmother, Catherine Duffy Comiskey, died in a Catholic nursing home called Sisters of the Poor. I had always thought she died in Newark, NJ. But, when I looked for Sisters of the Poor on the internet, I came up with a Sisters of the Poor of St Francis in Hoboken, NJ. Was there a Sisters of the Poor in Newark around the late 1830s and it moved to Hoboken, or has it always been in Hoboken? Has anyone had experience asking for information on a former resident of this home? Thanks so much for your help. Irma in Florida
Thanks to all who responded to my request for this cemetary. You people were right on, as I found James Casey buried at the Calvary Cemetary in Woodside, NYC. This is really exciting stuff, as I always wondered why he was buried away from the rest of his family. However, when I called the cemetary, they told me that he was buried with 5 other people! So, this might mean that he was buried with his family, and since his wife and children lived almost 40 years after he died, they were all buried together in New Jersey! So maybe I will get his mother, father, and siblings, too! Now, all I have to do is to send $30 to them.......... Anyway, thanks a lot for all of your help! Tom Novak
Hello all, For those who are new to the list and also for those who are not so new, here are the names of those who I would appreciate receiving any information on. All are from the HOBOKEN AREA -- 1882-1906 time frame NICHOLAS BRONOVICH MICHAEL PAULETIC ANTHONY AND MARTIN POLIKNICH/PALINCH The spelling of last names could be a little different As always, many thanks for your help. There is a Calvary Cemetery in Queens. Perhaps the word that you can't read is city for New York City or just the abbreviaiton cmty. I found an ancestor of mine who had died in Hudson County being buried at the Lutheran Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens. The family had come from Manahattan and already had a cemetery plot in which many of their infant children were buried. Perhaps the situation here is that if James died before the rest of the family, there was not plot and he was buried with other family. I need help tracking down a cemetary. The person I am interested in is James F. Casey, who died August 7, 1902 in St. Marys Hospital, Hoboken New Jersey and his home was 321 Mountain Road in West Hoboken, Hudson County, New Jersey. The place of burial was listed as "Calvary XXXX", where the last word is unreadable. It looks like it might start with a "C" or an "A" and end with an "ly", but like I said it was unreadable. The only cemetaries through the various web sites with cemetary listing I could find in New Jersey that started with Calvary was a Babtist cemetary, but that wouldn't do because he was Catholic. Does anyone know of a cemetary around the turn of the century who's name started with "Calvary" and went out of business? This might clear up a mystery for me, as his wife and most of his children were buried about much later at the same plot in Holy Name Cemetary in Jersey City, but I have always been mystified where he was buried. Hi Listers, I need a Jersey City historian! I'm seeking some info regarding Simpson Grace Methodist Church on the corner of the Boulevard and Tonnelle Avenue in Jersey City. I've been told that it is now some sort of Korean church. Who would have the Methodist records? Did this building ever burn down in the earlier years! All help is appreciated. Regards, Karen Isley Seiferth
