    1. [NJHUDSON-L] Naturalization Petitions
    2. Lauren J. Eastwood
    3. You must write to the Hudson County Passport Office for naturalization petitions. It's in the Hudson County Administration Building. I believe the address is 595 Newark Ave., Jersey City, NJ. I went in person. The staff was very nice, but the office was understaffed and genealogists were a low priority. People on NJHUDSON-L who have dealt with the office by mail have had long waits for the documents they requested and have had to make follow up phone calls. On the positive side, understaffing meant they simply handed me the large ledgers which I requested. I was able to handle the original naturalization petitions of my great-great-grandfather and my great-grandfather.

    3. My gggrandfather, Richard R. Rappleyea (1814-1884), was one of the originators of the Fireman's Exempt Association of Jersey City. He was a carpenter by profession but belonged to the volunteer fire department and was foreman of the Hercules Engine. I found this out from his obit. Would you be able to get info about him? 1. Re: [NJHUDSON-L] Firemen in New Jersey
    2. Ann Victoria, Thank you for giving us that information about fireman. I live in a town of around 50.000 people, and our Fireman are volunteers. They all have full time jobs, most have young families, and they are so dedicated. Every time the siren goes off, I find myself saying a prayer for any victims of fire & our wonderful volunteer fireman. Theresa

    1. Re: [NJHUDSON-L] Firemen in New Jersey
    2. << Fireman's Exempt Association of Jersey City >> I questioned, can't recall where I got the email address, what this meant, Exempt Fireman. I received the following email: Any firefighter that has been active (answers 60% of yearly calls and drills) for seven years becomes a member of the New Jersey State Firemen's Association. The main benefit is the death benefit, at this time (1999) it is nearly $7000 ($14,000 for line of duty deaths). The association is funded by a percentage of all homeowner insurance policies written in NJ. In addition, it funds the Relief Association, which gives firefighters that are desolate money (once or monthly) to live on. It also funds the NJ State Firemen's Home in Boonton, a nursing home that is available to any firefighter. At this time (1999) a full care only costs $700/month, much cheaper than a regular nursing home. Any other questions I'd be glad to answer, hope this helps. Ed email address: FIREMANEDV@aol.com Hope this helps someone. Ann Victoria

    1. [NJHUDSON-L] Peacock obit. lookup, 1899
    2. Ray Horton
    3. Concerning my GG Grandfather, Dr. Rufus Wilie Peacock, who practiced in Jersey City at 234 8th St. after graduating from NYU Medical College in 1875, the official "Report of Death" is listed as 7 Jul 1899. No one has been able to find an obit. Since then I've found a conflicting death date. The records of Arlington Cem., Kearney, NJ have his death as 7 Feb. 1899. This date has been further confirmed by a brief obit. in the Journal of the American Medical Ass'n (JAMA) Vol. 32, pg. 385, which also lists his death as 7 Feb. 1899. Not sure why the difference, but if 7 Feb. is correct, then maybe that date could be checked for an obit. If anyone has access to obits for 1899, a lookup for Dr. Rufus Wilie Peacock died 7 Feb. would be appreciated. Also, does anyone know if the structure at 234 8th St. would be still standing. I called them and talked to the guy in charge of compiling the Dept History for info about my GGF James MEEHAN (1843-1899)the 1st Fire Commissioner for a Paid Dept in Jersey City-1871. He was useless-he doesn't know where anything is???? I know Bayonne has a Firefighter's Museum. You might try calling the Dept's that you are interested in and ask them if they have something similar? Usually when people don't want to be bothered they say all the records were burned up in a fire! You might have a better chance at the J.C.Library-Newspaper archives-NJ History Room. They might tell what papers and how far back they go;but to get copies and lookups you have to go there. That's about all I know. Regards,AL Thomas Novak wrote: > > Al: Since you are a fireman from the JC area, I have this question.
