I need someone to take over the monitoring of the Passaic County GenConnect Boards. It is quite simple. You get a copy of all posts and when you see something that does not apply to the county, you delete it. If the post is on the wrong Passaic county board, you move it. If someone changes their address and notifies you, you change it to the new one. If someone gets the new posts via email and then their email address is no longer valid, you go to the administration page for the board and take their email off the list. It costs nothing to have the boards; just a bit of time. Do I have a volunteer? Here are the URLs. Hi list, I'm still hitting a brick wall with my Patey family from Jersey City. I found my ggrandfather's birth cert. in Gray, France and still can't find out when/how he came to America. Either he came over right from France or went to England with his father, Simon and brother, Charles and then he, alone, came to America. His name was Achile Patey. I tried census and nationalization records with no results. A lot of records were burned and I have looked at all ships landing in the New York harbor, etc. from 1853 to 1854 with no results. I now have a Richard Patey who was born in 1865 and married a (Ann) Katherine Dempsey who was born in Cork, Ireland in 1873. I'd love to connect him with Achille but it turns out he's from a lost branch of the Patey family. No census or nat. papers on him either....... Anyone out there know of these Pateys? Any leads would be welcomed! Joan (formerly from Bayonne - now living in Roanoke Rapids, NC) Also researching connections with the JC families of, Mott, Riordan, Weidlich, Aberley
Hi Joan: A naturalization record might give you an exact location. Before 1906 courts could ask any info they wanted to. Some asked a lot, some hardly anything. If he was alive in 1900, the census will tell you what year he immigrated and if he naturalized. Usuallly people went to the court nearest where they lived, so that would be the place to start. Collect every possible record you can for him and for his siblings. You might get a clue from them. This is how I found out where my great grandmother came from. She died in 1899, no obit, death record said "Ireland" but her brother's 3 line obituary in 1907 said "native of County Fermanagh". Good Luck! If you know the approximate date of immigration, then I would search through the ships that arrived and see if I could find him on a pssenger list. If he was located, where the ship departed from might be some clue. George Conklin
Pinckney Jones Harman, Jr. was residing in Jersey City, NJ prior to his death (May/1966). Does anyone know the complete date of his death? I want to get his obituary, but can't do that until I know exactly when he died. I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thank you in advance. Jeanette in South Carolina
Hello all, I posted an earlier message and part one of that message was answered by two very knowledable folks. However, part 2 remains and so I am posting it by itsself. Here goes. Is there anyone out there who knows where a location called "Back Road" in Kearney Township, Hudson Cty might have been, or what area that would be today. This info was from the Index of the 1880 NJ census and has the ED # of 57. Sure hope somebody knows something. Thanks ever so much. Joan
Joan, It will be a bit like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but might be possible if done methodically. If you have a FHC near you, go and ask to look at the microfiche of births and marriages for the various counties in England. Try to find a county that has a high concentration of persons with the surname you are looking for. I didn't know what county my GGF came from in England, but remember my grandfather calling him a Yorkie. With this bit of slang I chose to do Yorkshire County. I found a couple that was a combination of my GGF's middle name and surname. I kept the info as I didn't have my GGF's parents info. It turns out that the couple that caught my attention are my 3GGP's. I wish you tons of luck in your search Bertha Hall Plainfield, CT.. ----- Original Message ----- From: joan doyle <joane919@home.com> To: <NJHUDSON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 27, 2000 1:25 AM Subject: [NJHUDSON-L] Where do I go from here? > Hello, > > Now that I know my g-grandfather was from England, how do I go about tracing > where he came from in England? Hello, Now that I know my g-grandfather was from England, how do I go about tracing where he came from in England? All suggestions and help is appreciated. Thank you, Joan
Joan and et al, You would think that since my first home was Kearny, and I grew up in West Hudson County, this information would be commonplace to me. It was not. I learned it recently from reading the 1924 publication "History of the Municipalities of Hudson County." Page 361 of Volume One tells us that the old Copper Mine avenue was the "back" road. From the description, I can tell you that it is now named Schuyler Avenue, and runs past the Arlington Cemetery (near the old copper mines) to Harrison Avenue. It had been called the Back Road since colonial days. Hello List Members, I am hoping someone out there can help me with 2 Questions. Today I received a copy of the 1880 census index for what I had hoped would be the family of my grandfather. Where his name is written there is also a space for "Relationship". In that box are the initials "NR". I am interrupting this to mean Not Related. Does this sound right? Any other possible explanations? Listed are a husband and wife and 4 children ages 4-13..2of the 4 have the "NR" next to their names. Question 2 is the address on this Census form, it is listed as being in Kearney Township, Hudson County and for the street it is written, "Back Road". Is there anyone out there who might have more information on the street name. The words are in capitols, for what that is worth. Certainly would appreciate any help with this one. All replies appreciated. Joan

I am researching my family tree and looking for any information on the PIKE family who resided at 106 Duncan Avenue Jersey City. I know they lived at that address during 1917 and 1918 and that there was a son TED and a daughter GRACE. Ted served in the U.S. ARMY during World War 1 and was wounded. I believe that GRACE was married 1917-1918 to a George (?) and they had five (?) children. My father George T. Wallace, brother William, sister Marion and parents George T. Wallace and Catherine (Kitty) also lived on Duncan Avenue. We have letters written by TED when he was serving in the U.S. ARMY. My belief is that my WALLACE family is related to the PIKES but I don't know how. Any help from any relatives, friends or neighbors will be greatly appreciated and will gladly share all my info. I see alot of Kennedy action on the list now and figured I'd go with one of mine: Thomas Angelo KENNEDY b. abt. 1846-50 (I believe in NY) m. Julia F. RUSSELL on Jan 25 1871 at Our Lady of Grace RC Hoboken. Children: Ellen b. 1873; Mary Agnes b. 1875; Julia b. 1877; Thomas Edward b. 1879; Grace and Annie b. 1882; Elizabeth b. 1883; Frances b. 1886. Don't know when Thomas Angelo died but his wife, Julia RUSSELL KENNEDY died in 1888. Of their children, I know of 2 marriages: Mary Agnes m. Thomas QUILLIN on June 24, 1902 in Our Lady of Grace RC, Hoboken and Frances KENNEDY m. Henry JOHANSEN on June 17, 1916 at OLG. Any connections to these Kennedys? Elizabeth Russell Forsyth
I am trying to find ANY information on my father's family: George Joseph Madden, Sr., and his wife, Theresa MacInerney. They resided in Bayonne, NJ (in the 1930's and/or 1940's) on West 13th Street. My father, George, Jr., had 3 sisters: Theresa Jane, Mary C., and Helen Marshall, and an Aunt: Agnes MacInerney. They were Catholics and my father attended St. Peter's Preparatory School and St. Peter's College in Jersey City from 1933 to 1939. This is not much to go on and I am desparate for any help I can get. I thank you in advance for your help and advice.... Marti
I noticed the offer for obituaries. Thank you. I also have some questions which the list will probably provide for me: 1. Does the Bayonne Library have obituaries from Jersey City in their holdings? Probably the Jersey Journal, just guessing. 2. Does anyone know the cost of obtaining copies of these? My guess is copying costs - maybe 50 cents or something. 3. How far back do they go? I would be interested in searching for a few people that have eluded me at the State Archives. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Marcelle
