FYI--I just came back from the public library in Jersey city off Montgomery street, and the New Jersey room (3rd floor) now has census microfilms for New Jersey! Unfortunately, they did not also buy the soundex, but at least it is a start. They also have maps where you can figure out the enumeration district for the street you are looking for, so it isn't totally like looking for a needle in a haystack. I was able to find the people I was looking for in the 1870 and the 1880 census. Besides the national census, they also have the ones that New Jersey did, like 1885. Tom Novak
Would anyone have information on a Thomas CONROY BORN, March 9, 1891 in Brooklyn to Thomas Conroy and Mary Flaherty. they lived at 184 Wallabout St, when he was born. Understand that he might have gone blind in the 1920's , he had been a truck driver in 1910 at 19. His other siblings were, Michael b, 1892, Nora b. 1894,Annie b. 1895, Margaret b 1897 & Joseph b. 1901., these siblings were sent to St. Dominic 's Home in May 1905. Thomas didn't have to go , he was older and could work, Annie died in early 1904 and shortly after that their father Thomas was killed on the waterfront where he worked. While at the home Joseph died Aug 1905, children went home to their mother June 1907 address 49 Columbia St. , Brooklyn. Thomas no info on him: Michael marr. Eliz Lunann in 1923, 2 sons David & Edward, Nora marr. Frank Phipps, and had 2 daughters, Theresa & Honora, Margaret marr Thom.Lyons, no children. Between David & Ed Conroy they have 8 children. Theresa & Honora had 6 children. David died 1980, Theresa 1994, Honora cc 1957. Know the parents of Mary Flaherty Conroy, but not her husband's Thomas, or where in Ireland they are from, they arrived in 1890. Anyone with information on this family please contect us. Thanks muc Ed & Lorraine
Looking for an Anna Snyder, She was married to a Ward Killmer, and they lived in Jersey City, or Bayonne, New Jersey. They had a daughter named Myrtle Kilmer and possible another sibling but I am not sure. Her Mother was Louisa Snyder but later became a McCarthy. Anna left Ward and didn't tell anyone (that we know of), I don't know when, but she never came back. Ward waited 7 years, and then was married to Alice McCarthy, the 7-year rule. Allowed them to be married. If anyone has any information on Anna Snyder please email me direct. I have not idea how to even start looking for her. I know nothing except what I have just stated. So please if any info email me Dennis Killmer Fort Worth, TX http://home.earthlink.net/~dennismk1

An additional fact that is amusing -- during the parade they had a float that was the "Hudson Burlesgue Float" and had 3 of the old time strippers on it. Please be aware that after the incorp of Union City in 1925, many of the street names changed. The Union City post office has a book with the transformations -- it was printed by the Hudson Dispatch in 1940. I was lucky to find someone at the post office who found it in their basement and gave me a call back with the new addresses -- it is mostly street names as opposed to house numbers. This also affected other towns as well such as Weehawken. I then also found someone here who told me that all the West New York and North Bergen street names eventually changed as well and you added 44 to the original number -- so 10th street in West New York became 54th street. This did not occur immediately in 1925 for even Union City. Hello, I'm wondering if anyone on this list is related to the Williams family from Kearny NJ. They lived on what was once called the Back Road, in modern times known as Schuyler Ave. The great-grandparents were Henry and Eliza Williams..their children, Henry, Thomas, Grace, Mamie. Thomas, my grandfather, married a Annie O'Keefe. They had 8 Children, my Dad Thomas Lane was born in 1896. I,ve listed these details before, but not in awhile, so I thought I'd give it a new run. Your replies appreciated. Thank you, Joan Williams Doyle

Dear List People! I had relatives who lived in Union Hill, NJ I believe I have been told that Union Hill later became Union City. Is that correct? Also did Union Hill become West Hoboken and then become Union/Union City? Anyone have any early censuses (1820-1880) for this area of NJ? Does anyone know the ED #'s for Hudson Co, Jersey City 153 VanHorne and 447 Pavonia Ave del.nolan@gte.com
Does anone have access to Jersey City 1920 census index. I need a look up. Thanks much Deb
Keep going -- I also saw the Union town and that is near Hackensack. Jersey City is a separate town. If you continue browsing the list you eventually get to West Hoboken and Emerson HS was located there. I was down there last year and have pictures of the Emerson High School if anyone is interested -- as well as other schools in the area and also St. Michael's Monastery and Roosevelt Stadium. Contact me and I can email to you if interested. Another good source for old pictures is eBay. Search for the town you are looking for and you can usually find old postcards -- I copy the pictures for archives or you can purchase the postcards -- there are some good vintage shots. The 1920 Census list of districts is listed on Ancestry.com. Go to the Census, than to NJ and than to Jersey City. You will find streets and the district that they are in. Good luck to all of us on our searches. Lois
