    3. The monastery is a landmark. I walked past it as a child and am now amazed that it is visible from many miles away as you are approaching Union City from the turnpike exit in Secaucus. ST. Michael's monastery was 2 square street blocks large. It was to be razed and condos constructed there -- nuns were unable to hang onto the site, just weren't able to maintain it anymore (cost). I believe that I read that there was a handful of nuns left at the time. I'm happy to say that the church and monastery were taken over by a Korean churchgroup -- and part of the grounds are now used as a recreation field and track. Location was 18-21st St. and Summit Avenue to West St. in Union City -- formerly West Hoboken. I have no idea where the records may be kept and do not know the order of the nuns for the monastery. The monastery is a landmark. I walked past it as a child and am now amazed that it is visible from many miles away as you are approaching Union City from the turnpike exit in Secaucus. 2. C. Lisa
    3. Addresses in Union City (formerly West Hoboken & Union Hill) changed after the incorporation in 1925. The post office in UC has the conversion for the addresses -- I was able to obtain what I needed last year. You have to tell them that there is a conversion directory that the Hudson Dispatch Newspaper printed around 1945 or 48. They had it downstairs somewhere -- I would ask for the postmaster and refer to that. The town hall assessor's office (Sally) was going to make a copy for themselves -- I don;t know if they actually did. But also Weehawken and West New York addresses were affected as well. New WNY addresses added "44" to the old numbered streets -- 11th Street became 55th street. In Weehawken, 4th Street became 48th Street -- seems like same thing. So refer to the what the date was for the address you are looking for. There may have been impacts on other towns as well. Hope this helps. 3. St. Michael's records are at the Archdiocese of Newark Archives at Seton Hall University. In 1992 we found a dedicated archivist on their staff named something like Ellen McManamon who got all our stuff in 90 minutes and charged only $6.00 per hour! It broke my heart to see the Monastery go to wreck and ruin and then demolition. My great grandfather was the carpenter contractor on the Monastery and we were very proud of this beautiful building. 3. Hi all, I recently learned that much of the information can now be obtained from the town Health Dept -- as far as births anyway -- I believe that as of a certain year the information was given to the localites to handle -- probably the more recent -- I'll have to check as to what year onward this is in the towns themselves and get back to you with the information. But I've obtained my family info from the Hudson County office -- not the State. Easy for me because I'm still in NJ and drove to Jersey City which is much closer to me than the State archives. 2. The Goszka's
    3. Hi Don & Everyone, It has been my experience with the county certificates that they are - as you said - typed out, and sometimes lacking some of the information found on the "original" that you get from the state. When I first started genealogical research in NJ I used to send to the county for the vital records I needed. Then one day I had to send to Trenton, and realized that Trenton sent you a copy of the actual certificate. I sent to Trenton for copies of the certificates I had gotten from he counties, and actually found some leads on the ones from Trenton that were not on the ones from the county. I also found that one of the typed ones actually had some major errors compared to the copy of the original. To date I have always gotten my certificates from the Dept. of Health & Senior Services - haven't used the archives yet. I always let them know that I am a direct descendant and that the copy is for family medical records. That usually takes care of them blacking out the cause of death on the more recent death certificates. It used to only take about a month for a response from Trenton, but the last few certificates I have requested have taken 4-6 months. I have also noticed that once they cash your check it takes about 4-6 weeks to get your certificate.
