Hello, Has it been quiet on these List or am I having a problem with my computer? Thank you.
I have an address on a census of 79 Hudson. Does anyone know what this street is called now? thx Marcelle
If it's the Sisters of Charity from Convent Station (not Central Station), they now run St Elizabeth's College in Convent Station which is located just outside of Morristown, NJ. My daughter is a grad student there. Hope this helps, Susan ----- Original Message ----- From: C. Hi everyone. My mother passed away in 1997. She had mentioned that when she was growing up she was caught smoking and had been cutting school when she was in 8th grade. A truant officer caught her and a girlfriend. She had to go before a judge and he sentenced her to be put away for a year in a reform school. My mother said seemed like it was really a jail. But her younger sister says she thought it was a convent. Funny thing, my mom did mention a nice nun that she took to. No name of course. Anyone have any idea where she might have been sentenced to? I think they lived in West New York or very near there. Thanks, Sally Devine Morgan
Oops -- you're right, it is Convent Station -- don't know where Central Station came from -- too much on my mind -- thanks for the correction and the rest of the info. I just spoke with an acquaintance who originated from UC and North Bergen as well and she mention that the priests were "Passionists" (someone mentioned this already, but she confirmed) and she still contributes to the order and will eventually get me the address for any interested. She indicated that the nuns were the "Sisters of Charity" from Central Station, NJ -- so we now have 2 different -- but she was positive about this. Claire ----- Original Message ----- From: "C. I haven't posted these in a while so here they are: ROONEY PIKE CURLEY BARTON ISBISTER MCGRATH CULLINEN I have mostly information on ROONEY and dates from the late 1800s to the present. My genealogy web page is located at: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/g/r/e/Carolyn-R-Greene/ If you see a connection I would love to hear from you! Carolyn
Maybe someone can be of help. I am trying to find information on my Great Uncle George DALY. He was born in Jersey City on May 30, 1904. At the time of his death on Jan. 26, 1969 he was residing at 347 Grove St. He was a retired die setter for the Continental Can Co. He married Mae KRABEL, date unknown. Her parents are listed as Charles KRABEL and Elizabeth HARTMAN. At the time of her passing on Jan. 3, 1973 she also lived at 347 Grove St. According to her obituary in the Jersey Journal it list Mae as the dear sister of Mrs. Theresa PRZYBYLSKI, and the late Frank, Henry, William KRABEL, Mrs. Catherine FLYNN, Mrs. Gertrude MARTINEZ and Mrs. Elizabeth WINTERS. If anyone has information pertaining to any of the these families please email me. Thank you for your time and attention in this matter. I think it would be a great idea to put them at a site. My relatives lived in West Hoboken from around 1900 to 1920. I would love to see some of the old photos! Would we be able to download them to include in our family histories? Regards, Gloria M. Bauer On Tue, 9 Jan 2001, C. As I recall there were both nuns and priests there -- there would have to have been because of the church. I have pics of old postcards that I copied from Ebay and one of them has a lot of people on the grounds -- it's hard to tell but I think nuns in habit or perhaps also school children in uniforms. I've come to the conclusion that I will eventually put together a website with the many pictures that I took and postcards that I copied -- I think it would be fun for everyone, esp. those who don't know the area. Maybe I can even get permission from the town to use the historic pictures and notations on the calendar they put together for the 75th anniversary. Hi, I am emailing the list in hopes of some - ANY - information on a few of my relatives. Is there anyone who would be able to do a lookup for me in the 1870 or 1880 Census, Jersey City, Hudson County for: Daniel D. Tompkins m. Jane E. (Hinman) Tompkins having 3 children: Daniel D.; Walter; Matilda I believe Daniel D. died in 1889. According to the New Jersey Directories, Jane E. was the widow of Daniel D. and she lived at 173 Van Horne Street. I am hoping to "track back" further into my ancestry, having been told I am descended from Daniel D. Tompkins, VP. If you would have any information or leads for me I would greatly appreciate it. My funds are low right now due to a marital separation and probable divorce. Thanks!! My direct email address is: dreamer549@prodigy.net (home email); showersc@mcsd.k12.pa.us (work) Carolyn Showers, Tompkins descendant
