Just don't use it for dates ...... month and year may be fine, but if it says Dec. 1 or June 1 or Jan. 1 watch out! They're just copied from the Social Security Death Index, which also has a lot of mistakes. But where SSDI didn't have the day (most of the time), The Funeral Directors made it the first day of the month .... quite outrageous, if you ask me .... deliberately misleading us and spreading information they know to be absolutely false! And then each time something is transcribed again, more mistakes inadvertently occur. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dee Leviner" <jleviner@InfoAve.Net> To: <NJHUDSON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 29, 2001 7:11 AM Subject: [NJHUDSON-L] ArrangeOnline > I am new to Hudson County list. This is forwarded FYI from another mail list: ----- Original Message ----- Subject: Obit & funeral home website Thanks for the info about ArrangeOnline, which has great info on Funeral Homes in the US and Canada .... the site has one really major flaw, however, which will be terribly misleading to genealogists and family historians who use it to search for info on their relatives for Family Histories..... It lists a definite date of the "first of the month" wherever the exact date of a birth or a death is missing on the Social Security Death Index, from which it is apparently copied. > I checked three persons. Each obit flatly stated the person died Dec. 1 (not true, Dec. 22), March 1 (actually March 9), and July 1 (not true, real date July 2). > If we use this site for genealogy, as suggested, we will all have numerous relatives who are listed as being born or dying on the first of the month .... totally inaccurately. Furthermore, we will never know if our relative actually was born or died on the 1st, or if this organization simply assigned that date arbitrarily rather than admitting they didn't know the exact day! > What a shame they chose to do it that way! I fear it will do enormous harm if genealogists use this site! > > ----- Original Message ----- A new site named ArrangeOnline, has been formulated in cooperation with the National Funeral Directors Association. It has sections to arrange upcoming fumerals, but sections of this website can provide assistance to family historians. > > The obituary database is provided by the National Obituary Archive. I entered SHANNON only in the surname box & it had 5576 obit listings (alphabetical by given name or intial). The SHANAHAN surname listed 1158 entries. This database is not comprehensive, but it may be useful to researchers. > > The database of funeral homes is also searchable by country, state, city -- and even by zip code! This is a great way to locate current funeral homes in the city where your ancestor died, allowing you to contact them to see if their records contain any data on his or her funeral (and family). > > The ArrangeOnline website is still expanding into its role, but the data currently online can already be helpful to genealogists in the United States and Canada. ArrangeOnline > > or > > http://www.arrangeonline.com/
Here are some early Kearny population figures. 1870 - 974 1875 - 1,401 1880 - 2,777 1885 - 3,338 1890 - 7,064 1895 - 10,487 1900 - 10,896 1905 - 13,301 1910 - 18,659 Kearny passed Harrison in population between the years 1890 to 1895 (Harrison 1900 - 10, 596). Kearny shows only a 409 person increase between 1895 and 1900, but it should be noted that East Newark gained 2,500 Kearny residents (First Ward) when it incorporated on July 8, 1895. Does anyone on the list know how someone could get access to passport records? I got the idea I might be able to get some info on my grandfather's family from Hudson Co. that way. Hi, I'm asking for help again. Does anyone know of the Behrens Family? They lived on Bowers Street in Jersey City. There was an Uncle Henry and Aunt Emily, also a daughter named Emily, who married a Frank Roccio ( I believe that's the correct spelling). I don't remember if there were any more siblings in the family besides Emily. Sometime probably in the 50's, the two Emilys and Frank moved to Linden, NJ or the surrounding area. Henry was already dead by then. I remember that Emily and Frank had a little girl, but I don't remember any other children at that time. Thanks for your help in the past--hope someone can help me out again this time. Ruth Gray.
Hi all Does anyone out there still have the Union City 2000 Calendar that they would be willing to send to me rather than throw it away? I will be happy to reimburse for postage. Regards, Patty Fey pjfey@aol.com
I have had a lot of requests for look ups and I am excited about getting to work. Since it is easier to reply on the list than e-mail personally I will do that so we can all share information. If anyone has an objection please let me know. I should start posting on Wednesday as time permits since I will be researching on Tuesday. Wish me luck. My maternal grandfather, George Frederick RAWLINS was a trumpet player for MCCANNS CONCERT BAND Organized 10-2-1922 Members Local 526 AFofM ... Would anyone know how I could go about obtaining information on performances of that time (prior to 1933 when Grandpa) died? I would love to obtain photos and concert lists of performances as many of my cousins are musicians (including our children) who I am sure would love to learn more about our grandfather. Very truly yours, Charlene Spaulding email: mihnbu@aol.com El Cajon, CA "You don't know who you are until you know where you're from"

Well, hello all you new and old Hudson County people. I just received my CD from Heritage Quest with my 1920 Census on Hudson County. It is mainly for Weehawken and I will try to help you out if I can. Some of the entries are very difficult to read, some impossible and others seem just great. Ask me and I will try to help you out. PLEASE, PLEASE do not guess that your family possibly lived in Weehawken. This is not an easy process at best and I really don't have the time for wild goose chases at this time. If you are not sure where your family came from put this notice on a back burner and ask me to check it out for you in a few months. Also, if you know what street your family lived on that would help as well as any family members first names. Don't forget that there might be more than one family with the same name that you are seeking. Good luck to all of us on our searches. I have ordered and received the following church records from the LDS center for Union City. Unfortunately none of what I was searching for was there but perhaps I can help someone else out before I send them back within the next three weeks. If you want me to look something up make sure you give me as much info as possible especially the date or range of dates. I have : St. Augustine Church records, 1886-1959 St. Michaels (these include St. Mary's and St. Joseph's which were combined and placed in St. Michael's records) Church records, 1861-1921 Each microfilm lists baptisms, marriages, confirmations and marriages. The center is open two days a week and I try and get there both times. Let me know if I can help someone. In my immediate Vreeland family, I still have two problems. I know I can send away for the answers, such as birth cert. etc. but it takes so long! Is there another way to verify that one Garret Vreeland, born between 1858 and 1861 was the child of Garret Vreeland and Isabella Darling Vreeland? Also, I have a dangling relative I don't know where she belongs. Madeline Vreeland, born June 8, 1866, died 1915. Her tombstone is with my other immediate family in Fairview Cemetery and a Jennie Vreeland is also on the headstone. Love to know who her parents are. Would the census of Bayonne, NJ (where they were all born and lived) in those years help? Could any one out there help? Claire, I've lost your email address and hope we're not going around in circles! I've gotten a new email address mystery2@charter.net and my computer has been up and down so I've lost quite a few messages. Now, I hope, I'm up and running for good. Joan, born in Bayonne, now in Roanoke Rapids, NC
