Via phone call there is no charge, it might be worth it to spend the money on the call. However, all the cemeteries charge for the internment lists. The ones in NYC also send a bill for back taxes on the plots. The Lutheran All Saints Cemetery charges at least $4.00 per name per plot. I got so much information that I was willing to pay the fee. I have looked at the films of the day books for Holy Name and St. Peter's cemeteries. The plots all cost under $5.00 when purchased, some as little as 1.00. A few I saw were free because the person was poor. As others have said, the Church takes good care of this particular cemetery, so I can understand their billing for the time it takes to check the records and write the letter. The records are not on computer, they are all on individual file cards. One file is for the index , the other for the individual plots. All these records have been filmed and you can view them at you local FHL. I do usually call first and ask what the fees will be so I'm prepared. In October 2000 I sent a letter to Holy Name Cemetery with precise information (dates, names, etc.). Received the information in 10 days to 2 weeks, but no bill followed. Perhaps there is one individual minding the store on certain days, who charges a fee! After some thought, I decided to pay this bill for the information from Holy Name. However, it is deceptive to just mail out the information without first letting the person know that they will be charged for it. I will not be so naive next time. I will ask upfront what the charges are. Marcelle

I have been going to that cemetery for years and it is kept up beautifully. I have gone to the office on three different occasions and received the information that I requested on all three occasions and they never asked me for a cent. I was not able to find the grave for my great grandmother, because she does not have a stone. I had the plot number but it was so hard to find. I went to the office and they had a caretaker (maint. person) come with me and he found it for me. Most cemeteries have a small fee for mail servies. The new York Bay/Bayview cemetery in Jersey City, charges 4 dollars per request. At least that is what they chaged me for my "mail" requests 2 years ago. I understand that my GG Grandfather, Dr. Rufus W. Peacock, is mentioned in the New Jersey Biographical Index. Would anyone have that, and be willing to check it out for me. Dr. Peacock lived and practiced in Jersey City from 1870 until he died in 1899. - Thanks, Ray ___________________ Currently Doing Internet Research on Surnames: HORTON, PEACOCK, DAVIE/DAVEY, KEYS/KEYS, LEAHY, TIERNEY, YOUNG, LEROY, BURTON (ALSO NORFLEET, WOODSON, RAIFORD, DUVERNOIS), in Western TN; Hudson Co., NJ; NYC; Wayne & Johnston Cos., NC; Tipperary, Ireland; Fermanagh Co., N.Ireland; Broome Co., NY; Bordeaux, France. You may also want to contact the Diocese of Newark Archives at Seton Hall University. An archivist there did excellent research for my cousin in 1992 for a very, nominal fee. ----- Original Message ----- From: <JAG0618@aol.com> To: <NJHUDSON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 28, 2001 3:59 PM Subject: [NJHUDSON-L] Re: NJHUDSON-D Digest V01 #52 > Hi Marcelle > > Sorry to say St Matthew church that was on Sussex St is no longer. Someone posted in here a few weeks ago about a small cemetery on the Belleville Turnpike just down the road from Arlington Cemetery. It's a Jewish Cemetery, and has a Hebrew sounding name on an arch visible from the street. The arch is overgrown with vines, and is almost completely unreadable. Does anyone know the Jewish name for the Cemetery, or will I have to risk life and limb (those trucks go fast...) trying to clear off the vegetation? Thanks, Steve Lignowski Kearny USGenWeb
The Archdiocese of Newark permitted the Mormons to microfilm many records. If you can't get to the Archdiocese's archives, check to see whether St. Matthew's records are available through Family History Centers.
I recently called Holy Name Cemetery for internment records. The woman with whom I spoke read me the entire internment records for 3 plots. There was no charge for information over the phone.

Holy Name Cemetery has been filmed by LDS. They have a multiple reel index and then the internmant records on multiple reels. That is how I found my ancestors. Good Luck, Gloria M.
