    3. Lisa, At least one branch of the Vezzetti's stayed at 921 Castle Point Terrace until well after 1920. I went to Hoboken's SS Peter & Paul grammar school with the youngest son, John - he was always known as "Jackie". His older brother Thomas also went to SS. Peter & Paul, and later became mayor of Hoboken. In the 1940's and 1950's the family owned a hotel and bar, The Madison, on the corner of 14th and Washington Streets. I think that there were five children, Frank, Anthony, a daughter whose name I have forgotten, Tom, and Jackie. The closest church was SS. Peter & Paul, still located on the corner of 4th and Hudson Streets. 404 Hudson Street Tel: 201.659.2776 Ray C At 05:33 PM 3/5/01 -0800, Lisa Marin wrote: >Dear Listers, >I have been watching the emails back and forth about >Holy Name Cemetery and always had the feeling that it >had a connection to my family. 3. There also was an orphanage on the edge of the cliffs in Fort Lee called the Christian Children's Home. I have no idea who ran it or when it closed. The property is now The Atrium, a high rise apartment building. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maureen Shelly" <mcshelly2@msn.com> > I seem to recall one with that name on the top of the cliffs in Englewood > Cliffs or Fort Lee in the 1930s-1950s and then it was moved further north. >

    3. The subject of this post isn't clear. However, I recall a question on orphanages recently. There was an orphanage on the edge of the cliffs in Englewood Cliffs. It moved to Rockleigh, Bergen County, NJ many years ago. The Rockleigh facility was closed about 20 years ago. It had housed children whose parents were unable to care for them, not orphans, for as long as I can remember. The children left the Rockleigh facility after they finished the eighth grade. The boys often went to Boys Town in Kearney. I don't know where the girls went. Both orphanages were run by nuns. I believe the order was Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace. The property in Englewood Cliffs is still owned by Catholic entities. St. Peter's College's Englewood Cliffs branch is the major user of the property. Also there is St. Michael's Villa, a retirement home for nuns. Whoever is interested in the Englewood Cliffs/Rockleigh orphanage might write to the retirement home and see if any of the nuns there can point them in the right direction. The address is St. Michael's Villa, Hudson Terrace, Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632. The Rockleigh facility was sold to the Bergen County Special Services school district and now is used for special education. 3. Hi all, Maureen are you referring to the "St. Anthonys Orphanage" message?? I do believe you are right.. There was one there but they did in fact move.. Located on that site now is what is called the House of Peace... I know one of the nun's who work there.. I can try to find out from her where the records might be but these requests are always tough.. She is a very sweet lady but it seems like the church itself doesn't want the records found.. if you know what I mean.. I will call her though and give it a shot.. Let you know how I make out.. 3. Why not get them yourself from the Family History Center and you can view and review, or copy at 25 cents a page. You're close enough to call Hudson Cty. 3. Had they told you beforehand that they would provide it absolutely free, no reimbursement for research time or copying or anything? Or could you have misunderstood? Someone has to pay for the time, copying and postage these folks do for us, I think. Shouldn't we be the ones to pay for that cost? 1. [NJHUDSON-L] SPURR/ROGERSON, late 1860s
    2. Hi, As a new subscriber here are my current interests in New Jersey: Louis Henry SPURR m Jane ROGERSON at St. Peters, Jersey City, NJ some time before a son, Henry Louis SPURR was born Dec 29, 1869 in Jersey City. Frederick SPURR entry found in the New York City Directory, 1869: Frederick Spurr, jeweler, 60 Nassau, h New Jersey. Also this entry in the Brooklyn Directories - 1888-1890: Frederick Spurr, watchmaker, 794 Monroe, Brooklyn, NY. I have also found this info: that a Frederick SPURR married Huldah Amanda COUSENS sometime before 1872. She was b. in Lyman, Me and they had children Harriet Amanda SPURR & Emma SPURR, who were born in Jersey City, NJ. I have reason to believe that brothers Louis SPURR, Frederick SPURR and at least one other sibling, Selina SPURR (whose married name may have been MORRALL- I'm checking this out now) all lived near each other in New Jersey. They were born in Liverpool, England and immigrated to the U.S. as adults along with two other siblings, William & Francis, aka Frank. These SPURRs were siblings of my Gr.Grandfather Charles C. SPURR who moved to Richmond, Va in the 1880s after living in Newark, NJ - marrying Josephine Alice WADE and having several children. Any help will be deeply appreciated. Lois D. Smith Minnesota
