    1. [NJHUDSON-L] HIST. OF ESSEX AND HUDSON CO'S ONLINE
    2. Hi All, Today I came across the "History of Essex and Hudson Counties" compiled by William H. Shaw 1884 online in its entirety. I was very excited as my editions are old and fragile and the indices are poor. It looks as though there will be additional books posted. Go to this URL and follow the links: http://216.181.70.227/NJ/NewJersey.asp Would someone on the Huson County list please post this information there? happy hunting, Kathleen Pantano

    3. Naming patterns?? My Great grandfather was Paul Henry Slavik (Slavick, Slovick). My grandmother s birth certificate says he was born in Hungary. Anyone have a guess about his first and middle names. Might they be translated from Hungarian or Czech, or Polish? My grandmother Olga could speak some Polish. Thanks, Sally Devine Morgan Researching Devine, Freiknecht, Slavik (Slavick), Dunn, O'Callaghan (Callaghan), Mallins, Aymar and Reigan

    1. [NJHUDSON-L] IZOD
    2. Hi all Am trying to learn more about an IZOD familly who were living on 314 High Street, West Hoboken ( now Union City, I'm told) in the 1900 census. T. Arthur, b. May 1865, PA and Frances, b. Dec 1867, NY) had 3 children, all living. Arthur, b. Jan 1887 Jessie b. Mar 1889 Florence b. May 1893 Could someone check the 1910 census and find this same family. Son Arthur and d. Jessie probably have left home, but Florence might still be there. Any IZOD family in 1910 would be most welcome, as they are so hard to find. With great hope Joy in CT

Alot of immigrants and 1st generation children of theirs changed their first names to "Americanize" them. My mother had 2 sisters who did this to hide the fact they were Italian....made sense to them I guess. Surnames were corrupted for a variety of reasons; to hide ethnicity ie; Mueller to Miller...one of the biggest corruptors was Ellis Island. If their personnel could not pronounce your name, you became whomever their papers said you were..It was usually a phonetic spelling of what the surname sounded like to them. Death certifs are basically unreliable..the info on the decedent was given YEARS after the facts by an informant who probably never knew his/her inlaws. Most death certifs in my family from 1900-1930 give the wrong names for the dead persons mother & father. (still in Germany) Finally, I spent several years searching for my g grandpa..Adam John Eckert..I learned that his REAL name was Johan Adam Eckert..Almost all his brothers were named Johan. When they got to the USA the middle name became their first name & John became the middle name. This was very common in German families. Probably in othere cultures too. Good luck....Good hunting. Bruce Eckert Woodstock, NY..where NONE of the concerts were held. 3. Thanks to the folks for the suggestions, I do live 3,000 miles from N.J. and all N.J. census and directories have to be ordered from various libraries at some expense. All of my family lines are from N.J. and N.Y I have invested $100 in N.J. already for death certificates, married certificates. I need to have it narrowed down within 5 years for the search. Neither N.J. or N.Y return the money sent and each certificate is $10-11, so in the interest of finances I appreciate all the help I can get on line. I would be more then willing to look up info in Washington if anybody wanted it.thanks to all again for the help and suggestions. I am also researching Newark, and Monmouth county and Union co. in N.J. Loraine Magee

    1. [NJHUDSON-L] DINKLOCKER Family in 1860s
    2. Does anyone have access to the 1860 census and be willing to do a lookup for me, please? Is anyone else researching this family? Would love to share information. I'm looking for Christian (age 27-37) and Mary DINKLOCKER (age 40)), and 2-3 children (Jacob, Christian, and Annie) in vicinity of Jersey City. Also, is there any listing for a Jacob DINKLOCKER or Henry and Elizabeth DINKLOCKER (+ 3 children) in close proximity to Christian's family? I believe these are brothers to Christian who immigrated to the US at the same time. Alternate spellings of DINKLOCKER are DINKELOCKER, DINKELACKER, and DINKELAKER. Your help greatly appreciated.
