The only Catholic cemeteries in Hudson County are Holy Name and St. Peter's, both in Jersey City. St. Peter's records are at Holy Name. I've found Holy Name very helpful over the phone. I understand that records for both Holy Name and St. Peter's are available at Family History Centers. If you don't find your relatives at Holy Name or St. Peter's, try Holy Cross in North Arlington, Bergen County. It's near Hudson County.
Hello NJ list members, I am researching a distant cousin,Dougald B. S. Cockburn, who was born in Scotland and lived and died in Jersey City, NJ. He died 6 Dec 1903 at his home at 215 Eighth St. His obit appeared in the Jersey Journal and the NY Times. He was the Treas. of the Cockburn Barrow Machine Co in Jersey City. There were two Clubs mentioned in his obit: "the NY Caldonian Club and the NJ Bowling Green Club". Can anyone give me any info about these Clubs, especially during the 1880's & 1890's, the time period he would have been active in them. One day, we hope to publish the information in either book or CD form, complete w/ as many sources as we can located. Any help you can give us would be wonderful! -- Barbara Erwin-McGuire

I am interested in finding more information regarding my g-grandfather, Peter LYONS and his wife, Ellen CHRISTIE. They emigrated from (it is believed) County Cork, Ireland around 1863. While living in Jersey City, Peter became a US Citizen on October 20, 1868. A Charles LYONS signed his citizenship papers as being a person who knew Peter. In the 1880 census, I see a Charles LYONS living at 57 Beacon St., Jersey City with his wife, Ann and his sons James & John and his daughters Marurath and Kate. I'm thinking that Charles could be Peter's brother. If anyone has any information on this family, I would certainly appreciate hearing from them. Thanks, Betty Pruzinsky North Carolina -- RESEARCHING: LYONS, CHRISTIE (County Cork, Ireland, Jersey City and Paterson, New Jersey) WALTON (Leek, Staffordshire and Paterson, New Jersey) LANGMAN/LANGEMANN (Germany, Paterson, New Jersey) SIKKELEE (Holland, Paterson, New Jersey) --

I'm looking for ANY information on ANY Ephraim Cohen from around 1860-1890 who may have had ANY dealings in Hoboken, NJ. His age is in question, but one thing is certain, he was murdered in Hoboken around Thanksgiving between 1880-90. The cause of his death is in question. I have several stories. One, his future father-in-law owned an Amber store, where he was shot in a hold up. Another story, he was found beaten to death and dumped in the water in the area there. The story I think is listed as "Mysterious Death" and I think may have been in the NY Times, but I am not sure what newspaper in Hudson County. Any information with that name during those years is of interest to me. Other surnames his family went by: Kagan, Kagen, Kahn Other family surnames in the family: Kantor, Kanter, Hyman, Heyman, Rosenblum, Rosen and others _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
