If you know who you're looking for in the 1920 census has an index in soundex. Much of the info from the census page is there. You need to do it the old fashion and go to the films. Lauren: I went through the license renewal in May, and never had a photo id in my life - and no passport either. If you have a JC birth certificate with a raised seal, take it and the other documents totalling the number of points the DMV wants to the DMV office. They will go through a verification process for your birth certificate that will require you to return on another day to complete the process once your birth certficate is verified. Basically, they take a copy of your certificate, fax it to someone, give you back your original and your other documents and call you at whatever number you give them to let you know to come back to the DMV once you've been verified. When you return, you go right to the next part of the process with the paperwork they have given you, get your photo license and you are done. It was relatively painless. (its a bit insulting to have been a NJ driver for forty years in my case and have to prove myself, all over again - like any of this would stop determined criminals - but it is not anywhere near as bad as I thought it was. ) At least you had a passport. I had to pick my husband up at Newark, and all I had with my picture on it was a Costco card. They didn't want to accept it, but finally gave in when I showed them every piece of paper in my wallet, including my voter registration card. How sad for all of us that we have to go through this like we are all under suspicion, rather than the other way around. So I need to produce a valid license (not the one I've used for 50+ years!) and other forms of ID. Maybe this would be a good time to assume a new identity! ;0) BTW - I understand the old Maternity Hospital building is being renovated into condos and rental apartments. This is so aggravating! I, as probably many other list members, was born at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital (which closed in 1979). My mother received a copy of my birth certificate several weeks after I was born, but, because of the "suspected" sale of fradulent documents by county workers in Jersey City, my birth certificate is no longer valid!!! I'm one of those increasingly disappearing people who never got a photo license, because I wasn't required to. I use my passport when I have to produce photo ID. Next renewal, however, I'm required to add the photo to my license, which means I need to prove who I am and the old license doesn't count! So I need to produce a valid license (not the one I've used for 50+ years!) and other forms of ID. Actually, it pertains to all records housed in Jersey City. I do have one question. Does anyone know where I can get a list of street name changes for North Bergen. I have information that a sister of my great grandfather and her 2 children lived in Jersey City, NJ after 1910. Would there be any city directories that would possibly have them listed? Dora Velten and children Conrad and Dora Velten in 1910 census are listed in Jersey City NJ, county Hudson. 1920 census lists Dora Velten as head of household and daughter Dora. Thank you all so much, this is a new list for me. Maybe someone else is researching this surname. Ruth Ann -- No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition.
