    1. East Newark Businesses in the 1890s
    2. Tammy Beltle
    3. Hi! I'm back to working on my Duffy tree, frustrating as it is. I started working on my husband's tree because I was tired of staring at my "brick wall"! I was able to go back 5 generations on his mother's side in the span of a few hours. Boy, I love Scottish records!!! Anyway, family legend has it that my g-grandfather owned a pub in East Newark (or maybe neighboring Kearny?) at the time of his death in 1898. It was sold shortly after he died. Do any of you have an idea of how I can track down info on the pub? Since I don't have a name, I'd have to search by my great-grandfather's name, James Duffy. Any help is appreciated! 3. Linda and all I believe that Jersey City did have a WPA project, much like the one in NY City, in the 1930s. It is my understanding that this should include a photograph of the front of every building in Jersey City at that time. The last time I heard this collection mentioned was some years back, however. At that time, it was held by a city department at City Hall. It was available only to someone who could prove that they were the current owner of the property. The collection was not made available to the public. I have never seen it, nor any photos from the collection. It would be a wonderful resource if it were ever to be made available through a library or archives. In the meantime, the Jersey City Public Library does have a photograph collection that includes a great many Jersey City buildings, both public and private. You can find more information on their collections on the Jersey Room page of their website: http://www.jclibrary.org/service/njroom.php (At least, I hope that's the right link... I can't get the page to load right now.) Regards, Joan Joan M. 3. Dolores, I looked for pat* ryan in 1910 Hudson Co., born 1855 +/-5 years and two unlikely matches came up (one married to Delia and one on a completely illegible page). So I searched for cat* ryan same terms and found two, one married to Jerry and one who was widowed. She was listed as 50, with sons Thomas, 30, and Matthew, 25. She was born in Ireland, they in NJ. Says she emigrated in 1865 and had four children total with two surviving. Hope this helps. 3. I am interested in making contact with any descendents of or anyone who has knowledge of descendents of Michael and Delia Flynn who in 1918 were living at 30, Seaview Avenue, Jersey City. Michael worked for the Post-McCord Company at the Federal shipyards at Kearney. Michael and Delia's known children were Alice born 1891, Joseph born 1894, Frank born 1896, Vincent born 1897 and Walter born 1899. I am particularly interested in Vincent who died in 1918 in a flying accident while serving with British forces in Europe and am especially trying to find if his body was brought back to Jersey City for burial. 1. Variables of Ulysses
    2. Lillie Barnes
    3. I am new to this list and asking for help with the surname Ulysses. I have searched every means I can think of to track my gr-grandparents in the State of New Jersey where they were born, unknown as to the County. I feel that the traditional spelling of Ulysses may be wrong, as I have found many variables of the name. I am searching for: William Ulysses, born before 1830 Ruth Kern Ulysses, born before 1830 Their daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Ulysses RITTER and husband, William, migrated to Middletown, Ohio to work in the P. Lorillard Co. about 1885. Because P. Lorillard's home company was in Jersey City, I'm hoping Hudson County may have been where they were born. Thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to find some information for me. Lillie in Ohio

    1. Release of Info From Insurance Co
    2. I found an old premium payment book from MetLife Insurance Company and wrote to the company asking for any info they might have on my relatives named as insured. I got the usual "we can't help you because of confidentiality" statement from the office staff. I wrote another letter and pleaded my case to the president of the company and got the same response. I assured them my interest was strictly for informational purposes and not financial and that all the relatives in question have been deceased for over 30 years, but to no avail. Has anyone been successful in getting information on their relatives from an insurance company and if so, how?

I am indeed writing the book about Weehawken. I have been working on it for several years now, but my own serious illness in 2002 and the final illnesses and demise of my parents in 2003 and 2005 set me way back. I am happy to report that at last I am now finally spending most of my quality time taking the tons of material I have accumulated and fashioning it into the book everyone has been waiting for too long. 1. Seaching for Leads - New Durham & North Bergen
    2. Michael Whelan
    3. Hi All: I am desirous of locating local sources of information from either of the above listed locations relative to tracing my Hudson Co. Ancestors (Irish Immigrants, NJ, c. 1850-1870). I have been working on this since Jan./2000, mainly in my home state of CT. I have decided to try again in Hudson Co. which was their original residence in the US. I have done some work w/ the Hudson Co. Clerk's Office in J. C. (Naturalization Papers) and with the US CEN on Ancestry.com. In addition, we have uncovered some bapt cert. from Our Lady of Grace R.C. Church in Hoboken and The Parish of the Resurrection in J.C for bapt data from the defunct St. Peter's Church. A lady at Seton Hall ("Kate" - Special Collections Ctr.) has been especially helpful over the years. My G-grandfather, John Whelan/Whalen was b. in IRE (Co. Unkn.) in 1830. He departed from L'pool and arrived at the Port of NYC on 28 APR 1851. He mar. MARY HALL at O.L.O.G. Church in Hoboken on 13 AUG 1856. Their seven ch., (all b. Hoboken-J.C.area) include; Margaret (1857); Delia, (1858); Michael (1860); Alice M. (1863/64); Mathilda (1866); and twins, John J. and Nicholas B.(1869). Initially, JOHN, estab his fam residence in New Durham, per marr record. MARY HALL was initially a res of Hoboken. Her known bros were MICHAEL HALL, and PATRICK, b. in IRE in abt 1824 and 1825 respectively. They were also residents of the North Bergen- Union City-Weehawken area during that time. In the 1860 US CEN, the fam residence was listed as North Bergen, under the surname sp. of WHALEN. An apparent boarder, one Patrick Flannigan, was also res w/ the fam in 1860. I suspect that he was a bro-in-law to MARY (HALL) WHELAN. John was listed as a Quarryman in that 1860 CEN. QUESTION - Where would a quarry be in the area? It would appear from the ch. later bapt. records that the JOHN WHELAN/WHALEN fam moved to J.C. (St. Peter's). I have checked the J.C./ Hoboken City Directories for this period (1857-1870), but I have been unable to determine anything definitive due to (1) the common given name, JOHN, and (2) the interchangeable surnames of WHELAN/WHALEN/WHEELAN. It would appear OK for the first couple of years with a Hoboken address of Meadow St (No longer in existence) and subsequently becomes extremely difficult w/ many newer IRE immigrants having the same surnames. The family moved from the area in 1870 and est their new res in Bridgeport, CT at that time. I am not sure quite where to start re-checking in the New Durham-North Bergen-J.C area at this time. I guess that I'm searching for locations in areas that perhaps 1850-60s Irish Immigrants might have congregated and left some type of written record. Perhaps I need the services of a good reference librarian or local Irish genealogists. Can anyone advise me of some nearby RC Cemeteries that the Irish might have had their burials in? Possibly old Catholic newspapers or school records? Any suggestions would certainly be well received. Thanks Mike Whelan Windsor Locks, CT.

The fire was reported in The Jersey Journal of Wednesday 3rd December, 1952. In the death announcement that followed I learned that Peter was survived by two sons, Bernard and John and one daughter, Mrs. Mae Nicholas as well as 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He and his wife Julia were pre-deceased by three sons, Peter, Paul and Matthew and two daughters Elizabeth O'Brien and Julia Firth. 3. Hi, Ann, In February 2000, a very kind fellow genealogy researcher made copies for me of a booklet published in 1911 on the 50th anniversary of the town of West Hoboken. One page has pictures of some of the men who were town 'servants' i.e. Chamberlain, town treasurer, Karanfilian, Justice of the peace, etc. Also included is a picture os Geo. B. Meneely, Poormaster. I have often wondered if the was such a post as 'Poormaster' or is that a typo for "postmaster"?
