Linda you are out of luck. There is no 1885 or 1895 State Census. I did find my family on the 1892, and 1905 in Brooklyn but never had to use Manhattan. I have a Stephen Donovan who was married to a great aunt Catherine (Kathryn) L. Hanrahan (born abt 1897). I have info on the Hanrahan family, not on Donovan. Maybe I am confused. New Jersey had a state census and I thought that maybe New York also had a state census. I found a genealogist that works in Jersey City that has provided me with info from the New Jersey State census that was on the off years (like 1885,1895,1905..). I am trying to find if there is a New York state census and if anyone knows of a way to get someone to look up names. Since the 1890 federal census doesn't exist, it was really great to get some info from 1885 and 1895. New Jersey Library has the Jersey Room which is a terrific resource, is there something like it for New York City?? The names I am working on are: Heuer/Hyer, Wrege, Donovan, Dacey/Deasy... All I can find is that: Michael Donovan was born in Ireland 1846, he married Mary Bridget Dacey 2-11-1872 at St Mary's in Jersey City. The census indicates Mary came over around 1863 and she had brothers James and Dennis(they were mentioned in her will), she was born 1846. Michael died in 1896 I am looking at when Michael Donovan became naturalized by researching an index from the LDS library. They seemed to always live in Hudson county, so I looked for naturalization papers for Michael Donovan filed in Hudson County. Sometimes the headstone will list their place of birth. I've found out the locations from all sorts of ways. I found a 3rd marriage for one of my ancestors that listed his county of birth in Ireland. For another I found the headstone listed the county. For another I found them stopping off in Liverpool and it listed the county in that census. You have to try everything. Ancestry really blew open a few doors for me I would still be struggling with my lines were it not for them. Liz On 10/11/06, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: > > I have the same problem. its frustrating, since most of the government clerks couldn't be bothered recording the city. first try the church they attended. they can probably tell you where the ancestor was baptized. then try to get the marriage certificate and/or death certificate. marriage or church records are usually the most helpful. I had to work back from cemetery to death certificate to marriage befor I could get anywhere, but then it all came together good luck RJ Strutton -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, 11 Oct 2006 4:51 PM Subject: [NJHUDSON] How do I find out what part of Ireland my family members came from?? I want to find out what part of Ireland my family came from. Today I ordered 4 more films to come to look at the Michael Donovans that I found. It takes abut 4 weeks for the film to come to Indianapolis. IS THERE A BETTER WAY TO DO THIS?? With Mary. Hi, I belong to Ancestry. (Seems like all the names have multiple spellings.) Thanks, Linda Bradshaw, Indianapolis
Are you just looking for their names on the census records from 1860-70 to 1900? If so they would be on the Ancestry site, which I could check for you. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, October 11, 2006 3:30 PM Subject: [NJHUDSON] New York City Census and City directories > Does anyone know of a genealogist that can look up some names in New York > City? Does anyone know of a genealogist that can look up some names in New York City? Before my family came to Jersey City, they spent some time in New York City. This would be in the years around 1970-1900. Thanks, Linda
Linda, When you post to this list, try to mention the family name you are searching. Who knows, there may be someone who has already done the work. Hi Gerald - If available, you might want to check the death lists from the Great Flu Epidemic during that time period. It was extreme. Regards Jim Feeley

Mary does not appear in the 1920 censis. She probably died abt 1915-1919. Any help really appreciated. Thanks Gerald Fosdick
Hi Alan - This is a great resource. Is there any mention of Frederick Maas in this collection? Keep up the good work. Thank you for your help.
