    1. [NJHUDSON] Patey family
    2. Joan Studer
    3. You all are from Jersey City..... Is anyone connected or searching the Patey family from Jersey City? Anyone remember them? This was my Mom's people. I still have a brick wall or "hole" when it comes to Achile Jr. (Richard) Patey after he married Katherine Dempsey in a Catholic church between 1887 They went to St.Aedan's church or St. Bridget's, neither have a marriage record He changed from Protestant to Catholic and changed the name Achile to Richard. Any ideas? I have the rest of the family traced to the present.. Joan

    3. It may have begun as a need-based activity when there were real class/economic distinctions in cities. Does anyone know if TG begging was done in suburban areas? When my family moved to Nutley in the early 50's, the kids in my school had never heard of such a thing. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, October 25, 2006 8:21 PM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: Re: [NJHUDSON] Remembering Gail: As far as I can remember we went out on Thanksgiving morning as far back as 1930's. 3. I grew up in JC and Union City in the early 50's and we would go "begging" at Thanksgiving and we, too, looked like hobos. We usually got fruit or nuts and would knock on doors and say, "Anything for Thanksgiving?" Also went out on Halloween night and had to be careful because the bigger kids (usually the boys) would hit us with flour socks and/or mark our coats with the big, thick pieces of chalk. They were innocent, fun days... And to Maureen, I don't know if you have your mother's yearbook, but I posted the names of the graduates some time back on the JC site. If you would like, I will be glad to rephotograph your mother's photo for you if you don't have one. Just let me know her name etc. Mary Bier Wilson Fellsmere, FL

    3. The census divided by wards or districts. If you can find the person in the city directory you may be able to establish the ward or district. Joan Lowery on the list help me with a 1895 ward map. I found my family this way. The Jersey City Rootsweb site http://www.rootsweb.com/~njhudson/JC/1875_and_1885_state_census_findi.htm Bob Murgittroyd claims to have a finding aide for 1885 if you have the ancestors address. They both attended St. Bridget's RC on Montgomery St. JC and St. Michael High RC near Henderson St. , JC. He was very good looking and had a scholarship to St. Michael's and later through tract to Fordham University. His father ( she thinks was a policeman). He would have been born 1922. He became very successful but died fairly young. His sister Eileen (?) was very active in the Rosary Society. I'm the youngest in my family but remembered a Mulhearn that she said died many years ago. Don't know if this is any help to anyone. Justine (Teena) McCormick
