    1. Re: [NJHUDSON] Check out APP.COM - AP Wire
    2. This article is from the Asbury Park Press, from the Associated Press Wire: In part: Nov 30, 3:47 AM EST Birth certificates slowly going digital By JULIE CARR SMYTH Associated Press Writer COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- For decades, getting a copy of a birth certificate has required a weeks-long wait for the mail or a personal visit to a state's vital statistics office. That may soon change, much to the relief of those seeking passports, government aid and certain jobs. Vital statistics offices around the country are trying to automate the centuries-old practice of keeping birth records. Of course, the shorter wait likely will mean a higher cost to consumers. In Ohio, for example, the cost of a certified copy of a birth certificate has risen from $10 to $16.50 in the past two years. Fees in some counties, where various charges can be added, have reached $25. "It's a little pricey for a piece of paper, especially since I'm here in Ohio," said Lovelle Scott, a young mother with two children, who needs hers to apply for government help. States are increasing the fees to raise money needed to convert their birth certificate archives from dusty stacks of paper and microfilm to electronic databases. The idea is to make it easier to retrieve a copy in an era of heightened national security, expanded voter identification mandates, a national immigration debate and upcoming federal ID requirements. The transition also will streamline a growing number of government processes that rely on birth certificate information. In a message dated 12/2/2006 8:46:32 P.M. 1. [NJHUDSON] immigrant ancestors
    2. Saw this on another list. Ancestry.com has extended the free search of the Immigration Records through the end of December, so you have another month to check out the collection and find some of those lost ancestors. I was surprised that they had ships that sailed into Southern ports and California (as well as, New York, Baltimore, etc.) This is one of those really free no credit card promotions (not like a free trial). You just need to give them your name and email (and no credit card) and you can start searching the entire immigration collection. Here's a link to the promotion and more details. 1. Re: [NJHUDSON] ULYSSES family tree
    2. Joan M Lowry
    3. I agree that the search results for ULYSSES seems unusual. However, if you poke at this a bit harder - what you find are six other family trees that all link William Ulysses FREEMAN to his parents, Joseph Christy FREEMAN and Sarah BUTLER. Five of these six also list the spouse for William Ulysses FREEMAN as Myrtle HAVEN. They all put this family in Indiana. So - it appears that perhaps the one tree submitted with ULYSSES as a surname and giving the father's surname as FREENMAN is in error in several ways. It listed the surname as ULYSSES, when it should have been FREEMAN. And it listed the father's family as FREENMAN, when it too should have been FREEMAN. . In trying to replicate the searches for ULYSSES, I realized that part of the problem with the "exact search" feature is that the default for the search box fills in the father's surname as you fill in the individual's surname. So, when you type in ULYSSES for William's surname it fills it in for the father as well. Thus, the "exact search" feature can't find the family, since in the incorrect tree the father's surname isn't ULYSSES, it's FREENMAN. If you take the ULYSSES out of the father's surname - then the exact search feature does find William. Regards, Joan Joan M.
