On the 1930 census, for John Seckel in Bayonne, does it look like his parents were also born in Hanover ?

Hi, Justine, Speer Cemetery is on Vroom Street in Jersey City. Bob Murgittroyd is the person to ask concerning the history of the cemetery - he has been stufying it for a number of years. There are two distinct Varick families in Jersey City - and I have so far not been able to find any connection. The street is definitely not named after 'my' Varick line (John James Varick was a blacksmith). The street was either named after Richard Varick (the first mayor of New York City after the Revolution and one of the founders of Jersey City) or possibly after his nephew Dr. Theodore Varick who was the Surgeon General of New Jersey at one time. Please email me at tallygators@earthlink.net. Do you have any information as to how old the Speer Cemetery is? I ask because some of my mother's ancestors owned property in Speertown from about 1720 to about 1810. It is my understanding Speertown is now part of Upper Montclair. I am so pleased that the 'forgotten cemeteries' are now getting some attention. About 1974 I first discovered the graves of my husband's great grandparents, John James Varick and Elizabeth Waldron Varick in Speer Cemetery. Bob has been working to get help for this cemetery for years. I live in Tallahassee, Fl but have visited Hudson County several times over the past years. Elizabeth Waldron Varick is the daughter of Benjamim Waldron and Rachel Wilmarth. Elizabeth was born in NYC and that is where she married John James Varick. They were in Jersey City by 1858 (on August 2, 1858 John James Varick purchased a plot in Speer Cemetery). Elizabeth is a descendant of Resolved Waldron (one of the original patentees of Harlem, NY). Thanks to all who volunteered to help with those cemeteries. Floreda
