    1. [NJGLOUCE] Vertical files
    2. >Can someone explain what a vertical file is? At the Gloucester County >Historical Society they have a list of Vertical Files and I found >several of my family names listed there. What do I need to do to find >out how I can get copies of them if it's family information? There are >11 different families that match mine. Biggest discover yet! Debby Vertical Files are usually loose sheets of note, records, etc. that are kept in a file cabinet. As a file cabinet most often is only about 12 inches wide, 4 or 6 drawers high, as opposed to a book shelf in a library that can be several feet wide, I believe that is where the term "vertical" came from. You should be able to photocopy the material in the file. Pat B
