I neglected to mention that on an individual basis oysters were gathered by a process known as "tonging". A tool consisting of rake-like ends on long handles which operated in a tong fashion was/is used to bring up the oysters from their beds. This is done by one man while "dragging" usually involves a crew of at least one other person. Jeff Owens
