Can anyone explain under what circumstances marriage bonds were required? I have found a few ancestors marriages listed under the court records for marriage bonds. They all mention $500 payment to the governor. I am also wondering about the significance of the second person named on the bond---the person who is not the man seeking a marriage license. Was the second person backing the bond in some way? Was the person wishing to marry an apprentice of the other person? Thanks. Jane
