Hi Everyone - As some of you know, I'm sitting in NJ right now and not California! I went Cemetery Visiting today and while somewhat excited by my finds, I was a bit disappointed as well. I went to Overlook, wonderfully kept, found not only my great great grandfather Harry BENNETT's grave, but his mnother and father - in- laws as well, a bit hard to read theirs were, but I'm going to take care of that in the morning! The caretakers there are also wonderfully helpful. I was saddened though by the absolute disgrace that the Braod Street Cemetery in Bridgeton is in, luckily for me, I don't have anyone in there (yet), but, for anyone who does, I do feel sorry for you. Markers are broken, many are worn down to almost nothing, some are so overgrown with brush and ivy it makes it difficult to even spot them, and lets not leave out all the ones which have sunk very deep into the ground. Many of the "historical landmarks" in Bridgeton are in quite similar shape, take the David Sheppard House built in 1791 for instance, it's terribly run-down. Onto the Second Baptist Church of Cohansey out on Roadstown Road. Better kept, but, some of the markers are weather worn to where they are totally unreadable, or they too have sunk into the ground, I must say, I could not find one Sheppard from my line buried there. Now, onto the site of the First Baptist Church of Cohansey, or Sheppard's Mill Cemetery, again, such a disappointment, same thing as the others over time, weather worn and unreadable, half sunken in the ground or totally underground now, I'm asuming the latter for many because of the size of the cemetery and fact that so much of it has no headstones showing. My largest disappointment with this one was the fact that the current pastor of the Cohansey Baptist Church told me about 6 or 7 months ago that Rutgers University was restoring this cemetery, I could find no evidence of this at all. The trip has not been a complete bust, I'm only a day into it and my grandfather turned over an entire photo album to me, not to mention finding my great great grandfather's grave and my great great great grandparents graves right next to him, well, that was a find, confirms their birth and death years! I was wondering, does anyone know where Charles E. Sheppard of the "Sheppard Papers" is buried? That's all for now, I'll be checking my mail every couple of days, so, feel free to respond! Take care - Deb _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
