Dear List, I would like to hear from anyone descended from the family of Edward Tonkin, b. 1619, who died in Burlington Co, NJ, on 3/14/1690 or 1691. His son, John, married Susannah ?. Their son, Edward, (b. 1706, d. 4/5/1768 in Burlington Co, NJ) married Mary Cole, daughter of Samuel Cole and Mary Kendall. One of their 9 children, Israel Tonkin, was my 4th-great-grandfather. I am trying to document all the Tonkins living in PA and southern NJ from the 1600's to the early 1900's, and identify the various Rachels, Williams, Edwards, Charles's, etc, so I can figure out which are in my direct line. You may write to me either on-list or off-list. Thanks in advance for your participation. Janet T. I'm not sure how that works exactly. And, there is another child to add to this: Merrill. Now, contrary to popular belief, the only Merrill found on the SSDI is NOT this Merrill, it may be his son, but, it's not him, how do I know this, first off, Emma was born in 1858, needless to say, it's very improbable that she gave birth at 61 years of age. I also spoke with my grandfather just a little while ago, he was born in 1922 and remembers distinctly that his Uncle Merrill was more than 3 years older than him and even fought in WWI. Merrill did have a son Merrill Jr., but grandpa doesn't recall much about him aside from he was living in Chicago when he died. I also have the funeral document of Uncle Merrill's other son, William, he was born in 1926, so, unless there was some miraculous conception going on, Uncle Merrill could not possibly have been born in 1919 and fathered a child in 1926! My grandfather also remembers that all three girls died young, now, they were all alive in 1900, I'd like to narrow down the years of search before I order their death certificates. I'm also curious as to when Uncle Merrill was born. Any help solving this bit of mystery is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! A couple of the ways in which you could "positively" (notice facetious use of quotes) identify her parents are birth/christening, death, will & land records. Obviously for this time period some won't exist (i.e.birth certificate). Newspaper obit probably won't help either (hope springs eternal). If her parents died w/o a will and they owned land, her name might show up in land records. To narrow down the field, try checking out Revolutionary War records for Flanigan's. Once you get further back, the NJ State Archives has Tax Ratable Tables for the Townships which list names of males of a certain age (21?, 16?). You might also see if Cattle War Mark books exist. If you are not in the NJ area, you might want to consider hiring a researcher to check. The cost is not much as there aren't many of these things around and they are easily identifiable so it won't take to long to check (2 hours?). Unfortunately, that is also the downside. You are staring to hit that border between "proof positive" and the prudent man principal. Ed. -----Original Message----- From: Valerie N. I knew my Ezekiel Peterson had a first wife, unknown, then married Ann Hampton in 1806, who was previously married to a Frost. That all was given to me from my great grandmother's stuff, and I've seen their tombstones over to Haines Neck Methodist in Salem County. What I think I found today is his first marriage in Swedesboro Episcopal records to Elizabeth Flanagin on 3 Jun 1793. So, would fit, unless there's another Ezekiel around, and there may well be. But what I want to know now is who Elizabeth's people are and when she died or is buried. Plenty other of my people in the Swedesboro records, so I'm not surprised he'd be in there. Any clues where I should look? She is not listed, other than this marriage, elsewhere in the Swedesboro records. Ezekiel names his daughter by the 2nd wife Eliza Ann, so maybe Elizabeth could also be seen some places as Eliza, but I'm not finding her in either the earlier Swedish or Moravian records, or the South Jersey Church records volume I have that includes Sharptown and Haines Neck Methodist records. Any one have a clue? All hints appreciated. Val

Hi again Everyone - Can SKS who has either the 1895 NJ census or 1895 Federal Census please look up the following for me? My apologies, I forgot to say it was in Paterson, Passaic County, NJ. Also, I appreciate the idea of Civil War Pension Records, but, since they did not leave England until 1886/7, and Nathaniel was gone by 1890, this doesn't seem possible. Anyway, she's been located in 1900, living with her daughter and son-in-law. I also have them from the 1881 in the UK before they left, my luck it's the one after they arrived that I need that no longer exists! I can definately say that by 1895, Eleanor was married, and most, if not all the children were no longer living with her, my main concern is with Margaret and Mary, they were listed in some papers as siblings to my 2nd great grandmother Eleanor Gee, all census's thus far have matched the siblings listed, with the exception of Margaret and Mary, finding one with them on it, and Elizabeth as the mother, no husband, as, Nathaniel was gone by 1890 according to the directories for Paterson, that would be the final proof I needed that I have the right parents for Eleanor. So, if you have, or know where I can find, access to 1895, if it was even done, please let me know, or take a lok for me, I would be ever grateful! I'm leaving the information in this e mail, just in case! 1890-91 Elizabeth Gee, widow of Nathaniel E 23rd near 11th Ave She had seven children total, I'd like to confirm how many were still living with her at this census to try to verify somethings, or eliminate her and Nathaniel as parents for my brick wall of Eleanor Gee. Henry, could also be listed as Harry, b. 1866, Eng. age 23-25 at this census - could be married by now Sarah, b. 1863, Eng., age 26-28 at this census - could be married Alice, b. 1871, Eng., age 18-20 at this census - could be married Elanor, Eleanor, Elinor, b. 1872, Eng., age 17-19 at this census Isaac, b. 1878, Eng., age 11-13 at this census Mary - unknown date or place of birth Margaret - unknown date or place of birth Emigration took place in 1886/1887, most of them would be working in the Silk Plants in some fashion. I am seeking information on Benjamin HAWK ( or possibly another spelling) who was born about 1740. I have found him in the 1773-1790 census living in Greenwich and Woolrich Townships. His will was written in Gloucester Co Mar 18, 1814. He was married to a Hanna as a second wife. These are the children named in his will 1. I have never heard of marriage bonds in NJ but marriage bonds are listed all the time in Virginia records. I always assumed it was a state thing and varied from state to state. Joan
Can anyone explain under what circumstances marriage bonds were required? I have found a few ancestors marriages listed under the court records for marriage bonds. They all mention $500 payment to the governor. I am also wondering about the significance of the second person named on the bond---the person who is not the man seeking a marriage license. Was the second person backing the bond in some way? Was the person wishing to marry an apprentice of the other person? Thanks. Jane
