    1. [NJGLOUCE] Proclamation Money
    2. Ed.
    3. Hi all! I was reading the will of Nathaniel Chew (circa 1731 of Gloucester Township) wherein he leaves his daughter Elizabeth Taber "Proclamation Money". I found a web reference to Proclamation Money but says that it wasn't used in either PA or NJ due to the stability of the local currency of the time. Has anybody else run into mention of it in any wills or other transactions? Can anybody through a little more light on the subject? Thanks! Ed.

    1. [NJGLOUCE] re:sloop Friendship
    2. Suzanne, I was very excited when I saw your post about the sloop "Friendship," that is until I checked the date. I have an ancestor, Arthur POWELL who appears in Gloucester County in the 1690s and in Flushing Long Island, NY in 1698, then back to Gloucester County. I don't know where he was before that. But, I have found an Arthur POWELL on the ship "Friendship," leaving Barbados 9 Aug 1679 - bound for London. It is my speculation that he did not go all the way to London, but got off at one of the American ports. I was hoping that your receipt would place the "Friendship" in Gloucester County, but alas the time is too late. Thanks for sharing, I hope you will keep the list posted as you learn more. Jean, Tucson, Arizona

    1. [NJGLOUCE] The Sloop the Friendship
    2. My husband and I found a receipt dated 1796 in a box of things from his mother's estate. John Schultze wrote that he owed David Chamberlain for work on the sloop the Friendship. The bottom part of the paper is David Chamberlain writing in 1797 that he had received payment in full. Does anyone have any idea of how I can research this? Neither name is known to my family yet. I have contacted the Salem Maritime Museum and the Maritime Museum on Long Island. They are both searching for me. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks! Suzanne

    1. [NJGLOUCE] POORHOUSE Information
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted information about the history of the poorhouse in CAMDEN & GLOUCESTER Counties. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NEW JERSEY on the table of states. Just below the picture, in the section on LOCAL NOTES, you will find the entry marked with a big yellow NEW arrow. (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

    1. [NJGLOUCE] Scott/Shepard
    2. Hello list I am new to this list and I have several pieces to a puzzle that doesn't want to be solved. My Scott line is George Thomas Scott 1852-1923 but I don't know where he was born. I have found in a family bible (ony a coule pieces of it were left) that George had a brother named John born about 1858--don't know where. I have since found pictures of Mary Scott (Peters) and Julia Scott (Shepard). The pictures state they are sister's of George Scott. I have found in formation on Winfield Scott in McHenry County, Illinois that look like he is part of this family. Winfield married Dora Goodrich. The Winfield name is also in two other generations that I can place in my family. George also married Melvina andrews in McHenry County. George and Melvina settled in Granville, Putnam County, Illinois. They had six children and three survived infancy. Orville Winfield Scott 1876, Pruella Melvina Scott 1879 and Harvey George Scott 1886. George's obit states he has one surviving brother, John, living in Mark, Putnam County, Illinois. It also stated that he had family, Ora (I think it is Orville) and Harvey living in Owatonna, Minn. (year was 1923) George's death certificate doesn't state his parents. It actually didn't have his full name. It was filed under Scott. They located it with the date of death and wife's name. The picture of Mary Scott was taken in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There isn't a date. It shows a married name of Peters. Julia's picture states a married name of Shepard. I think the parents of these children are John Thomas Scott and Mary Huth. The 1900 census states George's parents were from England. Does any of this look familiar to anyone? Laurie Nevada
