The NJ State Archives handles requests from May 1848 -- May 1878. They generally provide a good service without problems. (I did misread the part about her getting such a great response from that Dept. I was thinking it was from the Dept. of Health Services.) It's the Vital Records Dept, now under the NJ Dept. of Heath and Senior Services that has new rules. If you go online to Vitalchek they only process short timeline requests, i.e., birth certificate for passport, proof of marriage, etc. They no longer process requests for any family history or genealogy reasons. If you send in your written request for birth, death, or marriage certificates that occurred after May, 1878 they now require such exacting info. as to make it almost impossible to receive the requested document in some cases. Example: your gr-gr-grandmother died Dec. 1, 1879 in Gloucester Co, NJ. You want to order a copy of her Death Cert. to learn the names of her parents, cause of death, and possibly the cemetery she is buried in. This was a real easy request, right? You have her name, DOD, and place of death. But, the new rules invoked with the new Governor's taking office now state that you must list that ancestor's parents' names in order to get a birth certificate or death cert. This applies to all those certificates many of us have obtained over the years and so excitedly opened when that letter from Trenton arrived and we finally learned the names of our next generation back. This is what all the furor is over. Thanks to you and others for helping to clarify the issue. Joan

I still have had no reply. They (the office staff) have been "looking into" it since then, or they were meeting with Assemblywoman Weinberg "that day" about the issue, or they would have an answer for me "that afternoon." Others have also tried to obtain an explanation. Perhaps you will have better luck? Joan

    2. Glenn, This is a FIRST!!! Many of the NJ County list subscribers launched an E mail, letter writing/phone call blitz in Feb. to NJ Dept. of Health Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg due to Trenton returning checks and written requests, stating they couldn't look up a certificate without the parents' names. Of course this was ludicrous since one of the main purposes of requesting an old death cert. is to learn the parents' names of the deceased ancestor. I hope your message means a change in heart in Trenton as no one ever had the courtesy to return a phone call or reply to our E mails except in 1 case of a "hold them off" type form letter response. Let's hope that others receive such wonderful responses as your following message implies. Thanks for sharing this as I intend to share w/ some of these lists. 1. [NJGLOUCE] Confusion perhaps cleared up
    2. Judy: That seems to be the consensus. No less than 8 people have had the same theory. You folks are probably right. Thanks, Terry C Probably the baby was living with and being cared for by grandparents (perhaps maternal grandparents) if there was no one in the household to care for a young baby. Even if there was adequate housekeeping staff in the family it was often felt that a young baby needed care/supervision of a female relative. Depending on the custom of the community he could possibly have been with a wet nurse. Judy Newman

    1. [NJGLOUCE] Census LookUps Needed
    2. Deborah Johnson
    3. Morning All - I've got some leads on various lines and would appreciate some census lookups from SKS if possible: 1830 - NJ - quite possibly Burlington County, but, I'm not positive. MINGIN - William - b. about 1818 (not sure if there are 1820 census records) SHARP - Mary Louisa(e) - b. about 1823 1860 - NJ SMITH - Margaret A. - b. about 1850/1 1870 Census - NJ SMITH - Mary E. - b. about 1861/2 - Margaret and Mary are sisters, I'm trying to find parents this way, Margaret was married to Henry Keller by this census, and Mary was living with them in the 1880, it's possible she is living with them in this one as well! 1880 Census - DE and NJ BENNETT - Thomas, father, no dates Harry, son, b. about 1867. I have Harry's death certificate, lists father as Thomas, mother not known, also gives no birth date for Harry. He and his father were both born in Delaware. I'm curious to see if he ended up in NJ prior to his marriage to Ruhamah Keller (daughter of above Margaret and Henry) in 1896 in Camden. 1900 Census - NJ KELLER - Henry about 55 then and Margaret, about 49 then, quite possibly in Cumberland or Camden County, trying to trace a lead from Henry's death certificate and obit. It lists the informant as Ada Gifford, and according to his obit, the funeral service was held at the home of his daughter, address is very hard to make out, trying to see if there was another child born to them after the 1880 census. Appreciate any and all help on these small leads! Take care - Deb _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp.
