Hi, If I might add some additional information that may help. There is a Fairfield Township in Cumberland County. Not having a map with the townships marked, a fair guess would be that Fairton was in this township. Someone being noted as living in Fairfield, in NJ language would mean that they lived out of a designated town. Also as a child we referred to Back Neck as an area south of Salem running on down the coast through the low marshy areas where we went crabbing and fishing. I'm trying to link my VA Kimseys back to the Gloucester Co., NJ Quaker Kimseys -- I'm pretty sure that, eventually, the two lines will connect. Here are my immediate questions: Does anyone have a listing of the children of a William Kimsey, m. Lucy Tredway (or Treadway) on May 6, 1739? Also, is this William Kimsey the same one who married Deborah Tatum on Dec. 19, 1748? This William Kimsey (or one of them) died in 1750, leaving three minor sons in the care of his brother, Thomas. These children -- William, Thomas and Jonathan, were to be bound to a trade when of age. Was there also a son named Benjamin, probably older than these three? In 1706/7, a Thomas Kimsey Sr. and Thomas Kimsey Jr. appear in Burlington, NJ (I think they possibly came from Flushing, NY). Does anyone show who these Kimseys married, and who their children were? Finally, everyone keeps referring to the Quaker encylopedia, which sounds great -- but what kind of information will I find in it? From what I've seen, it lists marriages. However, I haven't seen births/baptisms or children listed. Is this information in the encylopedia? Regards -- Judy Kimsey

Pat, I saw your recent message about Fairfield. Did that area used to be called Fairton? My ggrandfather, Frank SCUDDER, supposedly came from Fairton and I'm not having much luck with any info or links. This would have been circa 1830s -1890s. He married Augusta Stevens, from a German family, of Phila. They then moved to Back Neck?(I really need help with the location of this old name!),and finally lived in Camden, I believe. They had 3 children: Anna, Lillian Stevens,b.Sept.,1883,d.1964?, and William "Will". If you have any info or resource for these old town locations I would appreciate hearing from you
Does anyone know what this refers to? Mood #h8723 Thanks for any info. Joan in NJ

Hello, I am seeking any info on 2 brothers who came from the Wurttemberg area in the mid 1800s or earlier. They originally started farming in Vineland, New Jersey, and then developed their own successful farm in Elk(Ferrell), just south of Mullica Hill, NJ. I believe Charles Mood to be my ggrandfather and seek any info about his German beginnings. Thanks so much, Joan L. Fitzsimmons
I neglected to mention that on an individual basis oysters were gathered by a process known as "tonging". A tool consisting of rake-like ends on long handles which operated in a tong fashion was/is used to bring up the oysters from their beds. This is done by one man while "dragging" usually involves a crew of at least one other person. Jeff Owens
Exactly so. They used a particular type of sailing craft and "dragged" for oysters using a large basket-like device with steel teeth. This was raised by a hoisting rig and the contents, which included a lot of debri, were sorted to pick out the good oysters. Sometimes individuals in this trade are listed as "waterman" or "bayman". All types of fishing are seasonal and most involved in this work usually 'fished' for other catches at different times. Looking for any information on Charles and George Mood (brothers) who came from Wurttemberg area about 1850 to USA, then Philadelphia area, and finally developed large farm in Ferrell, near Mullica Hill, Gloucester County, New Jersey. Thank you for your help, Joan in NJ
I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to look up Captain John Van Sant in the following book. "Official Register of the Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War" as compiled by William S. Stryker, Adjutant General of New Jersey. Thank you so much for your help. Sincerely, Jean

Judy, so far I've found my Kimsey line attending the Haddonfield mm. Be sure to also check under the name Kinsey as they are both used for the same people. There is a book called Early Church Records of Gloucester County, New Jersey that was published in 1995 that may help. I don't have a lot on my Kimsey/Kinsey line but here's what I have. Keziah Kinsey, 2 Aug 1773-11 Dec 1826, md 1796 Jesse Chew. Her parents were Job Kinsey/Kimsey and Elizabeth Eastlack. They were md 1764. Job was the son of Thomas Kimsey, Jr. and Hannah Wood who were md 1740. Do you or anyone have more info on these Kimseys? All the above marriages and Keziah's birth were in Gloucester County. I don't have any siblings names for any of the above. Jeanne
