    2. Hello, I am new to the list and would like to post my interest. This is a very long shot, but I am hopeful someone out there may be able to help. Looking for information on: Firman C. HERITAGE, born circa 1837, somewhere in Ohio. Both of his parents were born in New Jersey, according to the 1870 Meigs Co. OH census. His mother, Anna, was listed with them in this census, in Ohio. Does this name ring a bell with anyone out there? I am told there are (were) a lot of HERITAGE families in Gloucester Co. Thanks for any and all information you may be able to provide- Debbie Peppones

    1. [NJGLOUCE-L] Re: Research in Rutland
    2. Phyllis, Thanks for the reply. I don't have too much on the Hose family. My ggrandmother was Louisa Hose,b.1845 (England),d.1917 in NJ. She married John Wortle Brooks, a shoemaker in England, and moved to Lynn, Mass., then to southern NJ (Elmer and Camden). Her father was Edward Hose, b.abt.1820, d.unk. I would love to find out more. A lookup volunteer from the LEI group found some Hoses in the 1851 census. It lists an Edward Chas. Hose and wife Sarah Ann but no mention of Louisa who would be age 6 by then (Leicester). Maybe it's the wrong Edward. Let me know if you show any other info or suggestions. Thanks so much. Joan in NJ

    2. Aaron, I have info on one particular Batchelor that married collateral into my BAKLEY line. Also spelled BEAKLEY BEKELEY BAKELEY BAKELY BECKLY BEACKLEY and a few other variations (11) that I have come across for the same family. My great great great grandparents Giles and Anna (Pettit) BAKLEY have this spelling on their tombstones, but, cemetery and death records record their name as BECKLEY. Diane

    1. [NJGLOUCE-L] Re: SCUDDER
    2. Malcolm, Sometimes we can get clues to other family members from the children's names. What were the names of the 2 children? Frank and Augusta(Eichele) Scudder married abt. 1879/80. the first child was named Anna,b.abt 1881, then Lillian,b.1883 (my Grandmother), then William Corson Scudder,b.1885 in Fairton. I believe Frank was a carpenter when living in Camden later on. Possibly there is a connection here since I don't seem to find too many Scudders from are areas of search. I know there also use to be Scudders in the lumber or construction business in Atlantic City in the late 1880s and then they also moved their business to Camden when it was the place to live. I haven't been able to show a connection without Frank's date of death or any other family names. Hope to hear from you soon. Joan in NJ

    3. In memory of those ancestors that gave their lives in service to our country. A Little More Than Duty Somewhere a bugle sounds, and men inside their building wait until the flag comes down. And others run to get their car quite harrowed or dismayed. Afraid they will not reach the gate before "Retreat" is played. Not thinking of the flag or men who fought to keep it flying. How many would be glad to stand whose bodies now are mute. Or have no hand that they might raise. and stand in proud salute. So accept it not as a duty, but a privilege even more. And receive as an honor, instead of just a chore. author unknown

    1. [NJGLOUCE-L] Y2K & Camden
    2. Now that all the heated communications about Camden are hopefully over, I would like to advise all of you that may have Windows 98; I received an email about a month ago stating that it was not Y2K ready, which really did not sound right, but there was an 888 number to call. To make the long story short Microsoft sent me a CD to update Windows 98 to take care of the problems that they discovered after 12-7-98. You may call them at: 1-888-MSFT-Y2K. You may access: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. , concerning those issues. There is no charge and they do not ask for your Windows ID # Also one person wrote back to me that they inquired about Office 97 and found it to be faulty also and Microsoft sent them a corrected CD. 1. [NJGLOUCE-L] KAYE family in PA & NJ
    2. Susan Kaye
    3. Hello out there! It's been a while since I posted our surname interests in Philadelphia and Gloucester Co., NJ, so here they are again: We're looking for any KAYEs in the Philly and/or Woodbury and Gloucester City, NJ, area--past and present. My husband's great-grandparents (William Henry and Fanny [EDMONDSON] KAYE) lived in Philadelphia, then Deptford Twp., NJ, and later Woodbury. William Henry was born in Philly in 1854; Fannie in Yorkshire, England, in 1859. They married in 1876 in Yorkshire, came to the US and had 8 children: Harry Edmondson (born 1877); John (1878); Elizabeth Worthington (1879); Richard (1880); William (1882); *Edward (1883); Alfred (1886); and Sarah Gertrude (1894). All were born in Philly except for Alfred (Deptford Twp.) and Sarah (Woodbury). *Edward KAYE married Elizabeth EDWARDS from Camden in 1908; they also had 8 children: Mary Etta (1908); Edward Jr. (1913?); Thomas (1918); twins Richard and John (1920); **Frank (1922); and two born after 1922 whose names we do not know. All were apparently born in Woodbury. **Frank KAYE married Evelyn PETERSON of Chicago about 1950-51; they had 5 children, the eldest of whom is my husband Frank Ryan KAYE. We've been married 27 years and have 2 sons. If you have any knowledge of any descendants of these families, please contact us ... we're anxious to share information and become acquainted with any "cousins" we can find! Many thanks -- and good luck to us all! Suzan Kaye Mountain Home, Arkansas

The volume number is Roman numeral II. The Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy is a great starting point, but a lot more can be found in the microfilms and other sources at the Swarthmore Friends Library. The college has a web site <http://www.swarthmore.edu> Click on "On Campus" then "Friends Library". Their complete catalog can be searched on line from this site. Jeff Owens

    1. [NJGLOUCE-L] OLD COUNTY RECORDS, 1700s
    2. BaggyGenes
    3. Hi All -- Due to popular demand, I'm posting the responses I got to the following query, posted on the NJ Gloucester and Cumberland Counties forums: Can anyone tell me whether written records still exist for Cumberland and/or Gloucester counties during the 1700 to 1750 time frame? If so, where do I find them? I'm particularly interested in any records that might show births or list children -- wills, birth/baptismal records, etc. Quaker records are also of particular interest. Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help! I have deleted names and email addresses, in case these folks didn't respond to the list for a reason. However, I don't think they'd object to sharing the data. Again, this is valuable information, and many thanks to those who have shared it. I also posted a similar query to the Quaker mailing list, and got a very lengthy response listing various Friends meetings in the areas. I'll send that separately. Happy hunting to everyone. Judy RESPONSE 1 Try the Colonial Archives of New Jersey--numerous volumes covering the material you mentioned--which contain much of the written archival material for early New Jersey. I have used them to locate abstracts of wills as far back as 1700. Most large libraries with any history sections have them, and I'm sure they are on the LDS microfilms as well. RESPONSE 2 Have you tried the Vineland Historical Society (Cumberland County)? I was fortunate to find a gold mine on my grandfather their. Good luck! RESPONSE 3 Not positive, but do believe Gloucester County does have some information on the Quakers. Here is their phone number if you want to call them. 609-845-4771 or if you want to write them it is, Gloucester County Historical Society, 17 Hunter St., Woodbury, NJ 08096. RESPONSE 4 Think I can help here -you need to visit your local genealogical library - and search through Hinshaw's Quaker volumes; if Heiss is available use it. you'll find what you're seeking and more RESPONSE 5: Most of the records are available at the NJ State Archives in Trenton, however, the Lummis Library in Greenwich has become another repository for some historic documents. The Gloucester County Historical Society in Woodbury and the Salem County Historical Society may be some other sources for you to explore. Remember, early Cumberland County history is actually Salem County history. RESPONSE 6 The LDS has Quaker mens records on microfilm #00020462,covers Greenwich N.J. and Phila. Pa. RESPONSE 7: The collection of Charles E. Sheppard called "My History and Genealogy" has been a wealth of information for me about Salem and Cumberland Counties in the early days. The collection is available on 17 rolls of microfilm from LDS family history centers. RESPONSE 8: I've got a copy of a recent book(1998) called Early Records of Cumberland Co NJ compiled by Charlotte Meldrum that has a good representation for records of the early 1700's.....another source might be the local historical society. This is the response I got back when I asked about the publisher of the above book: I got the book thru Family Line Publishers.....they have a web site, but I don't have it handy....I think it's moved anyway because they merged with another genealogy book place.....the book was very reasonably priced...has records from various churches, baptisms, cemetery burial records, NJ Archives for early marriages....the church records are the best part, for in some cases, it looks like as a family joined the church, all their vital statistics were entered in some kind of log, birthdates, marriage dates and children's info, all as a family group.....great resource! The version of this book for Salem County is much more complete and contains a lot of friends meeting notes. RESPONSE 9: Hinshaw's Volume 11 has abstracts of records from Salem Meeting and Burlington Meeting. I believe that Philadelphia was the monthly meeting for these two local meetings. I also have been told that almost all local meetings records are held at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Delaware Co., PA My note to the above -- In earlier research, I've heard that Swarthmore does, in fact, have a large collection of old Quaker records, but I'm not sure if they include NJ.
