Don - Death, birth and marriage records prior to May 1878 are obtained from the State Archives not the Health Dept. The cost for a record/search is now $10.00 each and they will search a 10 year span. I have several forms, if you like i can scan it and send to you. Today I called long distance to the NJ Dept of Health and Senior Services, Gloucester County Clerk and Clayton Municipal Bldg. in my effort to obtain the death record of Sarah Ann Cliff who is buried in Cedar Green Cem and who died Sept 3, 1871. I learned from the state office that their death records begin in 1878, however, I learned nothing from the other two except from each to call the other. Can anyone please suggest a better way to accomplish this task. Thank you, Don Cliff
The Historical Society of Pennsylvania has the papers of Dr. Asa Matlack Stackhouse who did extensive genealogical research on Matlack and Stackhouse. ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: [NJGLOUCE-L] MATLACK family of Salem County Author: <[email protected] > at internet Date: 7/10/99 8:49 PM I am trying to find some information on the MATLACK family of Salem county. I have been able to trace my ancestry to Joseph MATLACK (2/28/1779-9/9/1847); according to my records he was married twice, first to Abigail SLAPE (8/24/1782-10/4/1831), then to Mary (maiden name unknown, 4/1/1815-9/29/1847). I have a record of one son Joseph MATLACK (1814-8/16/1888), born to Joseph and Abigail. I have extensive data on the descendants of Joseph MATLACK. My primary goal is to try and find a link between these members of the MATLACK family, and the extensive MATLACK family of Glouchester county. I anyone has any information that may shed light on this, I would love to exchange data. Thanks in advance for any assistance! Sincerely, Barry Hummel, Jr. Glendale, CA Researching: GARRISON, HUMMEL, JOHNSON, KIRBY, LAYTON, MATLACK, MICKEL, PINE, SLOAN, WEST, WHITAKER,
I may have all that at home also, but am in Tx. instead of Co. right now waiting for my Grandaughter to enter the world. Wes
I would not feel quite right if I failed to offer a lookup on this name. I have three entries, one most major, on the MATLACK family. Please send me an email, whoever posted the original query, asking me to do a lookup in the HISTORY OF CAMDEN COUNTY, on the surname MATLACK, and, as I can, I will send the data, which should be very worthwhile, to you. Yours, Vince
Please drop my name from the Gloucester County list as I will be away for awhile. Thank you. Maida in Nova Scotia
Have you tried the Family History Library Catalog? When I did a surname search there were 26 "hits" on the MATLACK name. One of the most promising was: Matlack Family Bible Records, 1737-1917; in the description, William MATLACK, immigrant from Ireland is mentioned, along with a grandson named Joseph MATLACK. This is on FHLC #1005024 it.3. In doing a film number search, it appears that this film is a compilation of A LOT of Family Bibles (abt 191!) in several items (but not 191 items). There are MATLACK records in the first three items at least (then my computer "perfomed an illegal action" and shut down the internet server!). I haven't looked at T. Chalkley MATLACK's records on the MATLACK surname, but he did write an extensive genealogy on the THORN/THORNE surname that I have found to be very reliable. (His "notes" are on FHLC #0555742-0555744, with an index on the first film.) Hope this is of some help. Pat B

Can someone please tell me the location of Naturalization Records for the county? I have learned that Camden Co. was part of Gloucester County until 1844. I believe that at least two of my ancestors, John Cliff and Hiram Myrose were made citizens during the period preceding 1844 while resident in that part of Gloucester that is in the present Camden County. I would gladly pay a reasonable fee for someone who would research and copy the records for me. Thank you very much for any help you can provide. Don Cliff

What exactly does it mean "will proved". Does this mean the person who made out the will has died? Many thanks.
Looking for members of family of J. FORREST SWEETEN, b. 1877, d. 1966 in Woodbury, NJ...he lived many years at 631 N. Broad St and was with Good Will Fire Co.nearby. His second wife was my grandmother, Maude Kille, d. 1963; this was her second marriage, too. Hoping to find a SWEETEN family member who has old photos that may have come from the home. Some of Forrest's children were Edwin F of Woodbury; S. Earl, og Clarksboro, and George R. of Barnsboro; Mrs. Ted Vaneman and Mrs Roy Justice of Woodbury. Thanks for any help. Some historical societies keep a Death Card Index which often contains the tombstone inscription. You might try the local historical society, which is probably the Gloucester Co Historical Society. You could also write to the cemetery to see if they have that info. Also, check the Rootsweb page for Gloucester Co. (http://www.rootsweb.com/~njglouce/) to see if there are any volunteers who will do the research or even the rubbing. -----Original Message----- From: the Ballerstedts <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Friday, July 09, 1999 8:00 AM Subject: [NJGLOUCE-L] Tombstones in Cedar Green Cem. >Eureka! Eureka! I found the BALLERSTEDT family plot in Cedar Green Cemetery, Clayton!! Unfortunately, the large plot marker (with William Ballerstedt, Sr. on one side - my GGgrandfather - and Rachel BALSTEDT (?!!? - except for this one side of the marker and her headstone, the name is spelled as I now spell it on the 8 other tombstones!) - my GGgrandmother - on the other. There are several lines of text on William's side, but I could not read it and I had nothing to do a rubbing with (I've never done one anyway!). Now that I'm back home in Oregon, I'm wondering how I might go about finding out what the text on the marker says. ANY ideas? Peace. Looking for anyone who may have PHOTOS of members of the KILLE family. WILLIAM E. KILLE, b. August 5, 1863, in Gloucester Co, probably East Greenwich Twp. was my gr.grandfather. Have no pictures of him. He was married twice:(1) Lillie May Ballinger (2) Lillian E. SMITH. The second Mrs. Kille may have had all the family pictures??? He died at 729 Berkley St., Camden, August 20, 1945. William KILLE had 4 children: Maud, Lucy, Walter, Alvin. Maud's second husband was FORREST SWEETEN of Woodbury...maybe that family might have some KILLE photos??? [email protected]
Hi, I am a new subscriber to this list. I just recently learned that my great grandparents, Tobias N. Panz and Mary Catherine (Brooks) or Christian Mary (Brooks) were married in Gloucester County in 1875. I am looking for info about her parents, Francis and Julia E. Brooks. Julia's maiden name is unknown. Thank you, Connie =^..^=
This is my first posting to the Gloucester County board but I'm hoping for great results. My grgrgrandfather, SAMUEL JENNINGS, born in NJ in 1807 (probably Gloucester County) has been my brick wall for a long time. Recently I found a SAMUEL JENNINGS listed on the late 1700's and early 1800's tax lists. Although this is too early for my Samuel to be paying taxes I'm wondering if this Samuel is either a father or other relative. I would be interested in corresponding with anyone researching the JENNINGS surname in Gloucester County. I have many photographs and other information to share Pat in Arkansas. ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. Mary, I'm trying to research back with my ggrandfather, Francis (Frank) Asbury Scudder, b.abt. 1851 and having lived in the Fairton, NJ area for some years (Cumberland Co...). It is interesting to note that Frank's forename and middle name is that of a well known Methodist-Episc.Bishop who brought Methodism to the Bridgeton, NJ area in the late 1700s. I am assuming his parents were involved with the church or knew Bishop Asbury for them to name a son after him. Perhaps your Dunn minister and Sarah Dunn Scudder were part of this family. If I can find out more about Frank's family I'll contact you. Thanks, Joan in NJ
I can't help but wonder if the '6 old chairs' with rush bottoms might have been Ware Chairs, built by a man of that name in Cumberland County (the Shiloh/Hopewell area)? They seem to have survived the centuries in good order. I have one of the six my Grandmother inherited from a mother-in-law. They are quite plain, round top ends planed off flat, with thick rush bottoms. Just wondering? Sorry, no Scudders or Dunns in my family (at least not so far) ;>) Regards Jeanne Researching WOOLBERT, DOWN, EMEL, SYNOTT, CROUCH in Gloucester/Atlantic County.
