    1. [NJGLOUCE] Finding place of death
    2. the Ballerstedts
    3. Background: My grandmother [Minnie (MORRIS) BALLERSTEDT] is buried in the Cedar Green Cemetery in Clayton. The date on her stone is 1918. The 1910 Census lists her with dad and grandfather in Philadelphia. The 1920 Census lists grandfather, dad and great grandmother in Philadelphia. I have reason to believe that grandmother was institutionalized, but I don't know where. Question: What is the best way to determine Minnie's place of death so that I can obtain a death certificate. Thank you. Pete Ballerstedt [email protected]

    1. [NJGLOUCE] Eleanor Lyle
    2. Linda Kaloski
    3. I am looking for information or classmates of Eleanor Lyle. She was my mother and died when I was 16, at the age of 48. She lived at 429 Hunter St. in Gloucester and graduated from GHS in 1931. She did not live with her parents...I think she lived with a minister and his wife. Her mother was Margaret West Lyle who lived at 804 S.12th St. in Phila., her father was George Lyle a bricklayer, and thats all I know about him. She went to Ursinus College and married John R. Graf Sr. in 1941, and they lived at 757 Roseland Ave. Montgomery Co. Phila. Pa. I'm looking for any information about her early life. I have many names of former classmates at GHS from an old address book of my moms: Grace Hunter, Lillian Kirby, Libby Lincoln, Mike Lenoard, Alma Richmond, Florence Tomlinson, Emily Wilson, Mary Walsh, Evelyn Lynch,Mcnallys (316 Hunter St) Miss Moss (500 Hunter St.)and Miss Byrnes(427 Hunter St). Perhaps someone knows the married names or they are someones parent, who is still living, and might have known my mom. Any information or connection will be greatly appreciated. She was a truely wonderful person and a great parent, whose life history deserves completion. Thank You Linda L. 1. [NJGLOUCE] BENNETT, KEY FAMILY IN WOOLWICH TSHP
    2. Hi .. I am looking for any information about the Key family who owned Racoon Island in the late 18th century and lived in Woolwich Township. William Key died in 1774 leaving his estate to: JOB, WILLIAM, JOHN (my ggg...), JOSEPH, and THOMAS. He had daughters Hannah Thomas and Sarah ...who married Benj. Ford of Chester Co. Pa. I would love to know where this family came from. I have heard that the family is Swedish and Quaker and that the name may have originally been KEJ. John Key married Sarah Bennett. Sarah had a sister, Hannah...who married a Job Thomas and I believe a brother ....Hance Bennett. I have found some records for the family of a Samuel Bennett in Gloucester and Salem...but I am not sure of a connecting link to my family. Most of my info has come from Trinity Church in Swedesboro and the N.J. Archives. I would love to connect with anyone who might know more about my family. Thanks, Bev W.

    1. [NJGLOUCE] Evergreen Cemetery, Camden
    2. Malcolm Sharp
    3. Last week I learned that about two years ago the corporation that operated Evergreen Cemetery in Camden declared bankruptcy. After not receiving a paycheck for several months, the caretaker quit. Since that time, little or nothing has been done at the cemetery in the way of maintenance. Due to the bankruptcy, responsibility for the cemetery now falls under the NJ State Cemetery Board. The City of Camden isn't involved since it isn't a picture of financial health. This morning I spoke with Lola at the State Cemetery Board (973-504-6553) and was told that the NJ Attorney General's office has prepared a case that it anticipates will go to court this fall. Deputy Attorney General Nancy Costello-Miller is preparing the case that asks the court to appoint a receiver to take over the business of Evergreen. Burial records would go to the receiver. There is income being held and it would be used for maintenance. I spoke to a woman in the City of Camden Property office who said that Evergreen is located in a part of Camden typical of many urban areas that have experienced decay. Her father is buried in Evergreen and she said that weeds cover much of the property and it is a target of vandals. Her father, a WWII vet, had a bronze plaque on his gravestone that was stolen. She said the VA was supposedly going to replace that and others. She noted that New Camden Cemetery, across the street from Evergreen, is well maintained. I have relatives buried in Evergreen and intend to continue to monitor the situation. -- Malcolm Schalick Sharp School of Policy, Planning, and Development University of Southern California http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~msharp http://www-rcf.usc.edu/~sharp

    2. Bob, Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, my Thomas Lacy married a Rachael, unk. surname, and were parents to my gggrandad, John Lacy, born in Ewansville, Burlington Co.,abt. 1828. John Lacy ended up in Salem Co., living on Whig Lane in Upper Pittsgrove Township, m. Nancy Hutchinson. I'm stuck on Thomas. Anyone out there show anything for Thomas and Rachael Lacy, abt.1825/1835? Any help would be most welcome at this point. Thanks so much, Joan Lacy Fitzsimmons

    1. [NJGLOUCE] Re: [NJCAMDEN-L] Evergreen Cemetery, Camden
    2. Malcolm, Thanks for the update on Evergreen Cem. I, too, have ggrandparents and g-aunts and g-uncles buried there, but felt totally "creeped" out when I saw it after I begged my husband to find the cemetery in the spring. What was once lovely wrought iron fencing around the site sits partially missing or fallen down. There are beautiful monuments inside that are too neglected and I definitely need time to think about a visit inside. The neighborhood is definitely not as our ancestors left it! I might try a trip inside if my husband accompanies me again. Unfortunately, even though I have the plot and section numbers, I don't know if the plot corners have any numbered markers or letters on them as in some cemeteries. Also, the main driveway in off the busy street is not blocked with a gate so that anyone can just drive in there. Apparently, homeless people and street people strung out on drugs +/or booze are using parts of the cemetery because no one monitors it and I'm not sure if the police even bother with them. Poor Camden has terrible infrastructure and financial problems. Has anyone ventured in there lately? How was it? Thanks again Malcolm, Joan Lacy Fitzsimmons in NJ

    2. Susan Kaye
    3. My husband, son & I did research in NJ a couple of years ago, and spent a whole day at the State Archives in Trenton. We walked away with an inch-thick stack of photocopies of microfilmed birth, marriage & death records (along with some newspaper clippings, etc.). The birth records we obtained have quite a bit of info on them -- child's name, birthdate & place; parents' names, ages, birthplaces & occupations; address where they lived at the time of birth; number of children born to the family at that time; and doctor's name. Every one of them says "Bureau of Vital Statistics" at the top; some say "State Dept. of Health" and others "State of New Jersey." Try calling the Archives and see if they'll do a search-and-copy for you, or if not, maybe they can suggest a local researcher who will. Good luck!
