    1. [NJGLOUCE] Question on "Squire"
    2. John Cresseveur
    3. Hi Folks, Thanks to everyone who answered. I tried to respond to each of you individually, but with the question being posted to five mailing lists, the response was simply too great. The general consensus seems to indicate that "Squire" was a given name for the Boone family, but can also be used as a title (i.e. Esquire). To those on the Nelson County, KY, mailing list - I'm up to page 267 on the book and still typing my fingers off re-creating the index. You have my promise I will never again attempt a data sort at 2:00 a.m.! John Cresseveur

Given the time period, if in US, not likely. Many of these titles have been used as given names. I have acquaintances with the first name "King" and "Judge". The former an insurance man, the latter is a college student. Squire, being an 'understudy' to a knight, and also sometimes was a nickname for the son of a rich nobleman, therefore this did have a titular origin as a means of address, and I guess that later usages just thought the application of it as a given name was appropriate. I am not the ultimate authority on this and could be countered re usage of this in the US. Jeff Owens

    3. It may not be relevant to what you're doing, but there is a surname Squire (and Square). I have it in my family in Scotland, and it was used as a middle name for some descendants. 2. Myrtle, Do you have access to the 1860 census or know someone who does? I'm trying to see who is listed in the household of John L. Lacy and wife Nancy at that time. They were either in Gloucester Co. still or had moved to Pittsgrove Twp. Salem Co. by then. Thanks for any help or info. Joan Lacy Fitzsimmons

    1. Re: [NJGLOUCE] Name: Squire
    2. It was a title and their are various definitions for that. From what I understand it was usually used for a person in a respectable position. My "Firth" family ancestors who owned a lot of property in Washington Twp., were known as "Squires". Wes Hayman

    1. [NJGLOUCE] Re: [NJCUMBER] VINELAND HOSPITAL
    2. On a similar note, I am searching for information about Cumberland County Hospital for the Insane as it was called in 1914. My one ancestor apparently died there in that year as listed on her death certificate. She was then a widow and aged 87. I believe she was there due to senility (Alzheimer's nowadays). Anyone know where this place was located and where old records might be? Thanks, Joan

    2. Carol Holt
    3. Gary, I couldn't get to the link you provided. It came up with message you can't reach page. So I deleted the bracket at the end and then it worked fine. In case anyone else had trouble reaching the site. Thank you so much for sharing this story with all of us on the Gloucester List. One person's caring (the fireman) brought part of a family together that had been apart. Nice to know there are still caring people out there. We tend to wonder at times. The world is so strange sometimes. It made me stop and think as in 1997 I found my birth sister, Doris, and we lived 30 miles away when we were growing up. Doris lives in Texas and I live in Tennessee. We finally met after 56 years. Now, we are sisters and best friends too. Doris and her husband visited us in Tennessee in June of this year. Family are important even if it takes you awhile to find them. Keep on sending us URLs for interesting articles. Also thank you for the help you have given in making genealogy connections available for others. 1. [NJGLOUCE] Re: [NJBurlin] History of NJ Counties
    2. Malcolm, When you look at a well detailed map of the counties one can't help but note the same names popping up in the Ewan area of Gloucester Co. with the Ewansville area in Burlington Co. There are Ewans, Wrights, and Budds all named for, in small towns, roads, and lakes. Was there a migration of these families in the late 1700s to early 1800s to account for the same family names in both locations? Thanks, Joan

    2. I have a dilemma that I hope someone can solve. Most of my Lacy ancestors lived in the 1800s in Salem and Gloucester Counties, i.e., Pittsgrove Twp., Mannington Twp.,Whig Lane, Friendship, etc. On my gggrandfather's death cert., for John L. Lacy it says place of birth was in Ewansville. I know this is in Burlington Co. in Pemberton Twp. Since the town of Ewan is just up the road from where they had been living for about 4 generations I don't find a link for how John would have been born up north. Was Ewan ever called Ewansville also? Also, another Lacy family is listed in the 1830 census for Gloucester Co. as living in Wootunk Twp. Where is Wootunk located in 1830? Can anybody solve my Lacy mystery? Thanks, Joan Lacy Fitzsimmons
