    1. [NJGLOUCE] Orphan's Court
    2. Lynn Dennis
    3. Hi all, Can anyone tell me about the information in the following publication of the Gloucester Co. Historical Society? "Petitions For Guardians From the Minutes of the Salem County NJ Orphans' Court." Compiled by H.Stanley Craig, pub by Gloucester County Historical Soc 1986 listing of ward's name, parent and date of petition for guardian, from terms 1802 through 1899 My gg-grandfather (I'm pretty sure it's him), Charles P. Walker, is listed in the book: Children: Walker, Charles P., Rebecca and James, parent James Walker. Term June 1836. Charles would have been 7 at the time. What does this mean? In 1850, Charles shows up in Woolrich Twp, Gloucester Co. in the household of Benjamin Black, a farmer. Anyone know of this Black family? Where is Woolrich Twp.? Four years later, Charles (1854) married Charity Davis. In 1861, they were in Paulsberg (Paulsboro?) Is this in Woolrich Twp.? Thanks in advance for any information.. Lynn Dennis (who just saw in the newspaper out here in Illinois, that her high school was among the top ten most challenging high schools in the country! Go Mainland Regional! Sorry, I couldn't help myself...)

    1. [NJGLOUCE] Migration NJ to Clermont Co., OH
    2. Carlene Morrison
    3. Jack Dole, Glenn Bingham, and others, I also have ancestors who migrated from New Jersey to Clermont County, Ohio. I have been researching my father's side of the family for about two years and it was his mother's ancestors who came from New Jersey. To be more specific .... I have traced back to a Richard BICKHAM who made a land transaction in Burlington County in 1699. He had three sons that I know of - Richard, Martin, and Thomas - all of whom died in Gloucester County, New Jersey in 1740, 1750, and 1754 respectively. I descend from Thomas BICKHAM through his son Caleb BICKHAM. Caleb Bickham moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before the 1790 Census and was there until his death in 1817. He and his first wife, Rachel SCULL, had a son, Thomas BICKHAM born about 1765. This Thomas BICKHAM also had a son Thomas D. BICKHAM who was born in 1803. This is my direct line. Thomas D. Bickham moved to Ohio sometime between 1836 and 1840 and was in both Hamilton County and Warren County. One of his sons, Thomas Davis BICKHAM was married in 1857 to Anna Mary MASTERS of Goshen, Clermont County, Ohio. These two are my great, great grandparents. Anna Mary MASTERS parents were Samuel Pearson MASTERS and Elizabeth WENE who were married in Warren County, Ohio in 1830 in Warren County and were living in Goshen, Clermont County by 1832. Both Samuel Pearson MASTERS and Elizabeth WENE were born in New Jersey. I am very interested in the reasons for this group migration. I have seen other familiar surnames in previous messages which are also either part of my line or are mentioned in wills, etc. And I agree, I hope someone takes on the task of writing a book. I will be glad to contribute all I can about my family and I am sure others would be glad to do the same. Carlene Morrison [email protected]

He was married to SOPHIA SOMERS and in 1802 they migrated to Tate Township in Clermont County. His history records the circumstances of his relocation to Ohio: "By the time the Revolutionary War was over, the fertile country down the Ohio River induced many to go there and establish new homes. Several Higbee families of New Jersey joined in the migration. They helped form what was known as the 'Collins Jersey Settlement.' With Cornelius McCollum, Isaac bought 200 acres from the Rev. John Collins near the mouth of Clover Creek. Here the two men built a mill to serve the needs of the pioneers. Tradition has it that Isaac's little home was a station in the underground railway." Isaac and Sophia, their three sons and their wives, all became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1832, and eventually went with the Saints to Missouri and then Illinois where Isaac Higbee died. Two of his sons crossed the plains to Utah where they settled. Isaac's son, JOHN SOMERS HIGBEE, married SARAH ANN VOORHEES, daughter of ISAAC VO0RHEES and SABRA ANN MOUNT. Can any one out there "shed any light" on ISAAC VOORHEES, his parents, birth (probably about 1764), etc. He died in Batavia, Clermont County, but some accounts have him coming from Pennsylvania and others say he moved to Ohio from New Jersey. 2. Kathy, Try contacting the Atlantic Co. Historic Society Library at 609-927-5218. They are open Wed.-Sat, 10AM to 3:30PM. I went there yesterday for the first time and found the volunteers there very helpful and knowledgeable. They have a real treasure trove of info and not just for Atlantic Co. Many of their files cover other areas of southern NJ. also. Good luck! Joan

    3. I consider Shrewsbury in themiddle of the state rather than north. Monmouth county is right next to Burlington so it was not far to go. Looking for a Daniel MIDDLETON married Sarah Ellis HINCHMAN, she b. 28 May 1815, d. 18 February 1842, Newton Township, Gloucester County. For Daniel, parents, dates, children, remarriage? 3. Hello Ginny, There is a Woodbury Monthly Meeting. You might be able to learn more about your Heppards & Osgoods thru the minutes of the Woodbury MM. Check your local Family History Center. They have some records (births & deaths, I guess) from 1702-1927 and records of the monthly and preparative (before it became an official Monthly Meeting) from 1802-1952. Good Luck, Maureen Foster >>> Ginny L Owen <[email protected]> 03/03/00 10:33AM >>> She was a dressmaker in Woodbury in the 1870s

    3. Dear "Cogan" and all: There are two large volumes of MIDDLETONS in the Gloucester County Historical Society Library, the notes of Mrs. Ruth Triol. It is xeroxed and bound, one volume being Middleton Males, and the other, Middleton Females. There are a great many Middletons in N.J., and it is a Quaker family. 3. Don't overlook the lure of cheap land. I've followed families from MA to RI to NY to Shrewsbury to "south Jersey" that were not Quaker. The old Kings Highway, which I live a block away from, was also instrumental in helping to relocate families into the fertile farmland of southern NJ. Charla in NJ

    3. I have a child of a family, who was given the middle name Heppard, which makes me think a grandmother or greatgrandmother was a Heppard. This family is: Joseph Osgood and his wife Sarah Brown, both born 1808, apparently Quakers (the obit of Annie says her family were longtime farmers in NJ and a Quaker family. One of their daughters was Hannah Ann (Annie) Heppard Osgood, born in 1840 and died in 1937. She never married but helped raise her great grand-neice and nephew (grandchildren of her sister) when the children's mother died. She was a dressmaker in Woodbury in the 1870s, and is buried in Eglington Cemetery in Clarksboro with her parents. Would love to find out about any Heppard family in the area, in hopes I can make a connection; and I'm happy to share what I have on the Osgood family. Ginny [email protected]

    3. My gg-grandfather, Andrew K. Sharp [1832-1866], and at least one of his brothers, Ferdinand [1823-?], were born in Burlington and moved to Cumberland. They appear in the 1860 census in Millville Township. Before them, the Sharps had stayed-put in Burlington. Andrew worked for Richard Wood [owner of most of the land that became Vineland]. -- Malcolm Schalick Sharp http://sharp.rootsweb.com -- Debbie J Peppones wrote: > I am not experienced with New Jersey research (yet!). > > Was there much movement and marriages between families of Burlington and > Cumberland Counties from about 1760 to 1800? > > Or did families tend to stick real close to home? > > Debbie Peppones > Researching: LEWIS, HERITAGE, MATTHEWS, MANCZ, PEPPONES

    2. Debbie, It did seem that a lot of early Burlington Co. folks migrated to the southern counties. There was a very early wagon road that ran from Burlington down to Cumb. Co. and they also used the proximity of the Delaware River to use various ferry systems to move around. Anyone out there with some solid answers?
