Hello New Jersey Researchers, Over the course of the next few months I am going to update the USGenWeb New Jersey State Web Site. I order to do that, I would like your suggestions on what to reorganize and what to add. Please bear in mind that this is the state web site and all suggestions should be about the state as a whole and not individual counties. Currently, the state web site is located at: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~njgenweb/index.html> This web site will remain static during the updates and be closed when the updates are completed. The new site, which is available now and will be available all through the updating process, is located at: <http://www.virtualnewarknj.com/gennj/> Please send your suggestions to me by replying to this email. Thank you for your cooperation, Glenn G. Geisheimer <njsc@virtualnewarknj.com> NJ State Coordinator USGenWeb Project <http://www.rootsweb.com/~njgenweb/index.html>

I always complain my parents save too much---When my grandparents died, I couldn't believe I would EVER complain about 'saving too much'. My grandmother kept everything---I inherited HUNDREDS of Christmas cards. Most, such as ones from neighbors that only say their name, I tossed out. But, TONS are from family members. I began writing a book on my grandmother's mother's side, my BLACKBURN line. Anyway, I came across a letter from a cousin, which although not dated, I could tell it was written probably around 1990. (Give or take a few years.) She wrote this lovely letter to my grandmother, telling about her family... and her budding interest in genealogy on her father's side, the BLACKBURN line. And if she would please write down what she knew of her mother and grandparents and send it along to her. Well, I had recently gotten in touch with this cousin, and so I sent her a note, with a copy of the letter. I said "I don't know if my grandmother ever wrote back, so I decided to write back... I'm writing a book about the Blackburn family... etc." It was a really neat experience replying to a letter my grandmother probably recieved and never replied to. This cousin says she does not remember a reply, but it was years ago and she sent letters to all her father's cousins... Likely with few responses. (No one knows anything about the Blackburn family--and everyone who did know, died years ago.) Ah well... Its a real blessing having packrats in genealogy. I just found an old battered suitcase with an envelope my mother must have kept from her father's possessions. Original birth certificates 100 years old, original naturalization papers for my gggrandpa, marriage certificates for my great grandparents and ggaunt. All things I planned on spending a lot of money on for copies. And yes, I am preserving them as well. I had the information from much of this already---births and deaths and such. BUT, it was really neat getting originals. Bradley Western New York, near Olean

Bradley - I can obviously understand your elation at your find, having copies or knowledge is one thing, but originals, especially ones as old as yours and my marriage certificate are a genealogists dream! My children and I spent last night preserving the orginal newspaper obits., as well as the funeral memorium of my great grandmother. There is also a handwritten list of names, possibly from my great grandfather's funeral that we are preserving as well, along with some handwritten letters and such. We also have the original tax license from my great granfather's barber shop for 1965 to 1966, it's being preserved as well. I say being because this is a time consuming process and there was a lot in the package from my grandfather. I wish I could help you with your line, but, I have no BLACKBURN connection that I'm aware of. I also wanted to share something, I can't remember what list she's on, but there is a gal who used to go with her father to my grandfathers barber shop. She is of no relation, but has been following my MINGIN posts because she grew up in Bridgeton, NJ. She has been so kind in sharing stories and showing names to her mother and a childhood friend for more stories or leads, so, always remember, you never know where your next lead will come from! Hi Everyone - I thought I would share this with all of you. A lesson learned, keep pestering an older relative, especially one who is a pack rat, to look for things that might help! My grandfather, Clarence Mingin, sent me a package yesterday which contained many things, from old funeral flower cards, funeral memorial cards, pictures and original newspaper obits. Among them was the obit. for his father, Clarence Albert Mingin (1892-1966), it listed Clarence's mothers maiden name! So here it is for all those researching the MINGIN line that I have "met," and those whom I haven't "met," William and Emma LONG! He also could not remember the name of the funeral home, but, that was in there as well, so, now I have another route to check into as well! AHH, but the mother of all that was in that package - the origianl marriage certificate of my great great grandparents on my grandfather's mother's side. It will be 105 years old in December of this year! Yes, I did take the necessary time to protect it properly! When I called him to thank him, he let me know he had a whole box of stuff! Take care - Deb _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
