    1. [NJGLOUCE] Civil War Veterans
    2. Deborah Johnson
    3. Hello all - Please take a look at the following e mail from a friend of mine, if anyone can help him or is researching those names, please contact me off list and I'll put you in touch with him. Deb, I know this is a slightly off the wall request, but is there a way for you to find the name of the cemetery for the following Civil War veterans who were associated with Gloucester County? Perhaps you know people who are researching the surnames? I have been looking for them for years and have hit the proverbial brick wall. Please don't go out of your way, but if you should happen to stumble across any of them in your research travels please let me know. 1. [NJGLOUCE] CARLL Family + Other Surnames
    2. Deborah Johnson
    3. Good Morning Everyone - Here's another page I brought back, again, feel free to pass it along. Since this is primarily about the Carll family, I shall put that surname in regular type and other surnames in all caps. Taken from the Gloucester County Historical Society - From N.J. Genesis? - hand written, hard to read Vol. 16 No. 2 - that is all it says on the page. I have no idea what year this article was written or by whom. Jeremiah CARLL - Was born in 1767, a son of John and Phebe (LOPER) Carll. The first of this family name noticed in Cumberland and Salem Counties were John and Abiel Carll, brothers and Eliakim Carll. The relationship, if any, of the latter to the brothers is unknown to the editor. John Carll was in East Hampton, Long Island, New York as early as January 21, 1668 when he purchased various parcels of land. He died at East Hampton on October 1, 1691 and his widow, Remember Carll, was appointed admr'x. (*my note, this must mean administrator) of his estate on October 21, 1691. They had sons, John and Abiel Carll. (Riverhead Parchment Book, page 14, and Riverhead Records, Liber A, page 144) (*my note, these must be in East Hampton) John and Abiel Carll, described as brothers in deeds for land at East Hampton, appear frequently in local records until 1714 when they apparently sold all of their lands at East Hampton. Between 1715 and 1723 they had moved to Salem County, New Jersey and registered their earmarks for cattle, etc. On the same page and written by the same hand in the Salem County Earmark Book with the marks of "John Carll Snr." and "Abiel Carll" is the mark of "Elicum Carrole". After he registered his earmark, nothing further is found in Salem County public records concerning "John Carll Snr.". Directly beneath the earmark of the latter is recorded one for "John Carll Junr". It is believed that he was the same as John Carll who settled in the Cohansey Precinct of Salem County (Cumberland County since 1747/8) early in the 18th century along with Eliakim Carll. More about these men will appear later in this article. Abiel Carll settled in Greenwich, Salem County (Cumberland) as early as 1719. He bought a town lot on the east side of the main street in Greenwich at the upper corner of the intersection of the road leading through Bowentown from Bridgeton. For many years a one story stone building long used as a blacksmith shop stood on part of this lot. It is opposite the brick house long occupied by the late Charles EWING. Abiel Carll and his wife, Sarah, died in 1739. Their son, Abiel Carll, Jr., by deed dated May 6, 1740 sold the town lot of his father to Samuel CLARK. Abiel Carll and Sarah Carll had several children; Abiel Carll, Jr. married Sarah TURNER, widow of John TURNER of the Town of Salem. Hannah, daughter of Abiel Carll was baptized at East Hampton on June 15, 1701. Martha, daughter of Abiel Carll, was baptized at East Hampton on January 10, 1714. She married Jeremiah FITHIAN, son of Joshua and Sarah (DENNIS) FITHIAN of Greenwich. Jeremiah FITHIAN was born April 5, 1713. His wife, Martha Carll, survived him and died in 1779. They had three children. Their son, Sylvester FITHIAN, was an idiot from birth and lived until about 1787. Hannah FITHIAN married 1st, April 10, 1799, William BARKER. She married 2nd, December 19, 1771, David MULFORD. He was killed in a skirmish with the Hessians near Haddonfield in 1777. His body was brought home and buried in the ancient graveyard of the Cohansey Baptist Church near the former Sheppard's Mill. Esther, daughter of Jeremiah and Martha (Carll) FITHIAN, married, as his 2nd wife, Thomas MASKELL, Esq. of Greenwich. On the road from Shiloh to Friesburg in Cumberland County was a settlement anciently called Carll Town. The precise time that John and Eliakim Carll came there has not been learned, but it was between 1735 and 1741. The road there is a boundary between the Townships of Hopewell and Stow Creek. On the west, or Stow Creek side, March 4, 1741, Eliakim Carll purchased a farm of 100 acres Zachariah DUNN. It is interesting to note that the records of the Shiloh Seventh Day Baptist Church show the marriage of Zachariah DUNN and Rachel Carll on January 28, 1739/40. Her identity has not been learned, but she was possibly a sister of either Eliakim or John Carll. Early settlers at Carll Town were Hugh, Zachariah and Benjamin DUNN, sons of Hugh DUNN of Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey. They were Seventh Day Baptists. Zachariah DUNN returned to Piscataway and he and his wife, Rachel Carll, died there. A little north of the farm bought by Eliakim Carll, on the Hopewell Township side of the road, John Carll bought a plantation of 155 1/2 acres. It was made up of lands of the West New Jersey Society and Cornelius MASON's "Winchcomb Manor". The Harmony M.E. Church was later built on this farm and in the last quarter of the 19th century it was owned by Reece HURFF. Joh Carll is said to have married Catherine DUNN. He died at Carll Town in 1768 and his son, Samuel Carll, succeeded him on the farm there. John and Catherine Carll had five children. Their son, John Carll, was baptized by Rev. David EVANS at the Pittsgrove Presbyterian Chruch on Mya 6, 1744. He settled in Deerfield Township and bought a farm near the present Woodruff M.E. Church. It is on the west side of the old Parvin's Mill Road. John Carll married Phebe, daughter of James LOPER, Sr. That's all for today, hope someone finds it of use :-) Take care - Deb _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

    1. [NJGLOUCE] Salem Co, NJ Palmers
    2. Beverly Gardner
    3. Is there anyone on the list researching Palmers from the Salem County, New Jersey area? I'm at one of those brick walls and if anyone could help me, I would gratefully appreciate it. Below is what I have put together from hunches, some census information and some marriages. I descend from William Franklin Palmer who I is listed below as a son of John C. Palmer. I have no proof that John C. is my William's father. Are there any connections to the Palmers found in the surrounding New Jersey counties? Mary Madeline Wheaton who married Wm. F. Palmer and William HH Wheaton who married Mary E. Palmer are more than likely brother and sister. Thanks in advance for any information or leads. 2. HERMON B FAGLEY
    3. 2 -5 times a day, I walk a mile plus on the wide berm of 4 lane Ohio RT 125 25 miles east of downtown Cincinnati. Seldom, whether I walk east-west,or,on Sugartree Road, do I walk beyond the 540 acres bought in 1805 by my Rev Jesse and Elizabeth Wilson Justice. They sold farms on Mantua and Raccoon creeks, Greenich township, Gloucester Co,NJ that 1805. Eastbound I walk past the 2 story frame they,or their son, Robert,b 1806,built. West,I'm walking past a 2 story, federal brick farmhouse built,I find,in 1818. It sits on a portion of the 540 acres. [7acres today]. 1818. They found, and preserved a date stone while remodelking in 2000. I think the old brick was built by Savil Wilson,Jr,of Woodbury Ceek,Deptford Township, Gloucester Co,NJ. Ann Wainwright Wilson was married Nov 20,1818 to John Iler [Jiler in the Swedesboro church records. They raised a son in Indiana, Savil Wilson Iler, who was very early in Oregon. Ex Nantucket whaler,Thomas Pinkham was the J.P. [He had sailed around the world, and named the nearby Ohio village,Bantam, for Bantam,in Java. ] Maybe John Wilson who,1807,m Betsy Leeds,of James and Rhoda Byard Leeds, is a daughter. If so,Mahlom Wilson, the 3rd to live in the old brick, was a kinsman. As was Cliff Justice,no 4,and Annabelle Justice Harris,no 5,and Rosalie Harris Douglass,no 7. [From memory] Edward Willson m Alexander Bennett's daughter at the Mt Holly, NJ Quaker meeting in the 1720's,and ,1730's,both families moved south to Woodbury Creek,Gloucester Co,NJ. 1747 Edward Wilson died, and his son,Sevil, got his plantation on Woodbury Creek. Widow Sarah Wilson was involved settling a WARD GIRL'S ESTATE. Sevil Wilson was one of the party who tried to break the Woodbury Creek NJ dam,in the 1750's,and also married Susanah Chew,of Jeffery and Amy Driver Chew then. 1786,Rev Jesse Justice lost his 1st young wife [STEELMAN?] up Mantua Creek, recorded Samuel Mickle in his store ledger. About 1790,he married Elizabeth Wilson,of Sevil,of Edward. . 1798-1803 Rev Jesse Justice was riding Methoidist circuts in NJ,and DEL.Born,1762,he had Rev War service on the Rebel side, while his 2nd wife's uncle,Jonathan Chew, was a Gloucester Co,NJ Loyalist leader. Sevil Wilson was taken prisoner by a British unit from Philadelphia, and jailed, awile. My own farm was Savil Justice,of Jesse m 1824 Ruhama,of James Blackman. I don't know how Wainwright ties in. I know it's an old,old Gloucester Co,NJ name, I've been told that Edward Wilson was a son of an earlier Irish Quaker,Savil Wilson, of Fenwisk's 1675 colony, and that infro came from the Woodbury Hist Soc Library- no proof. Jesse Wilson,of Sevil and Susanah Chew Wilson,as a Quaker, move to n Warren Co,Ohio. Beers "WARREN CO OHIO HISTORY" has his bio. 1846,Amanda Justice's diary tells of a visit from this farm,to 'Uncle Wilson". A night in the "Golden Lamb 'Inn in Lebanon,Ohio going [still open] and a night in my own Hon.David Fisher's inn in Wilmington,h was mentioned. 1820 CENSUS,Tate township,Clermont Co,Ohio census,Savil Wilson's name is next to James Shotwell's. James Shotwell is known to have had a stagecoach inn in the house just west, til 1838. Savil Wilson is known to have moved across Clermont Co Oh by 1826,wen he was a J.P.of Union township. Then on to Indiana.

    3. Good Morning Everyone - Here is the next page, again, feel free to post any errors directly to the list and feel free to pass this along to other lists you are on. A couple of notes before I begin, first, while I appreciate all the thanks you's for posting this, there really is no need, I have had so much help from so many on these lists, I feel it's the least I can do! I also brought back with me close to 1,000 pages of notes and family records and such, I will add a page a day to the lists as well, the bulk of this information concerns my stepfather's maternal line, he managed to get all the information in handwritten chart form before he passed, but was unable to complete the "book" the way he had done on my mother's side, so, that will encompass pretty much simply Surnames and first names and dates, I'm still working on how to do that one! Here goes: REAR, Ambros d. 1760 BACON, Isaac d. Apr. 12, 1754. 78y. BARKER, Richard d. Jan. 23, 1766. 50y. DOWDNEY, John d. Jan. 19, 1758. 58y. SHEPPARD, Enoch d. July 24, 1769. 59y. " Rachel wife d. 1. [NJGLOUCE] Correction to Cemetery Listing
    2. Deborah Johnson
    3. Hi Everyone - Below is a correction to the information I sent out earlier. Please, feel free to send anything you know to be off to the list, I'm just sending out what someone else transcribed in the 1940's! I promise, no offense will be taken, after all, we do like to be accurate! :-) Thank you Barbara! Take care - Deb Hey, Debbie..... Got one more correction for you...... Ephraim Sheppard, b. 21 May 1723, d. 8 May 1783. He would have been 60 years old and that's what you showed on your email. Just the death year is wrong. This info I found in "Cumberland County Genealogical Data", by H. Stanley Craig, pg. 150. 3. Hi Everyone - First off, Happy Thanksgiving to all! I hope many of you are enjoying it with family, as I am for the first time in 7 years! Anyway, onto genealogy. I threw out a question earlier in the week, which I already knew the answer to, just wanted to see who else knew. I asked if anyone knew where Charles E. Sheppard, the historian was buried. Well, here's the answer. Overlook Cemetery in Bridgeton, NJ. If you go to the Moseleum, face it, and then go to your left, his is either the second or the third tombstone from the Moseleum. It's right off the road there. Anyway, as so many of us with history in Sounthern New Jersey use his papers, I took a picture of it and will have it developed upon my return to California this weekend. Also, with regard to his papers, at the Vineland Historical Society, they are slowly transcribing them, if you were unaware, for easier reading, many are done, however, the Sheppard Line has yet to be started. I uncovered something at the VHS (so odd, that's the High School initials as well :-) ), they have many cemetery books there which were done by hand by a Charles Baker back in the 1940's or so, well worth a look. Anyway, apparently, Charles, at one time had transcribed as much of the "Sheppard's Mill" Cemetery as was possible, this is also the cemetery of the First Baptist Church of Cohansey, before it moved to Roadstown Road in the 1800's. Anyway, good news, I copied the pages and will also be posting them upon my return to California. I would also like to submit them to the cemetery and internment sites, anyone care to help me by telling me how to go about that? If I get the chance to get back there before I leave, I'll grab a few more, I didn't have enough cash on hand for more, and they don't take checks or check cards! Anyway, that's all for today. Hope everyone has a safe and joyous Thanksgiving. Take care - Deb _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
