    1. [NJESSEX] Declaration of Intention Question

    3. Maybe you folks can help me with this… My grandfather never got his citizenship. From what my late father told me, it was because my grandfather could not remember the name of this ship that he traveled on to come to the US… Does this make any sense? I vaguely remember that years ago folks who were not US citizens had to go to the Post Office and submit some kind of form, which I was suppose was a way for the Federal Government to keep track of where “aliens” lived… I am sure my grandfather had to do this… My grandfather arrived in the US in1907. I believe he may have worked in the coal mines of Pennsylvania, but then moved to Newark, NJ where my dad was born in 1912. Then they moved to NYC, then sometime after 1930 they moved to Long Island, and in 1948 they lived in Uniondale/Hempstead, and then North Bellmore (after 1951). So I know basically where and when my grandfather lived... Now the next question: My grandmother arrived in the US 1906, she was not married at the time. Apparently, she met my grandfather and got married, and yadda yadda yadda… My grandmother died (1947) long before I was born. I have been unable to find her on any passenger lists because no one seems to know the spelling of her last name… I have no idea if she filed a Declaration of Intention… Anybody have any ideas about how to go about searching for her last name? I do have a copy of her death certificate, but it doesn’t include her maiden name. It does however have her last known address and her social security number… Oh, I do know that her middle name was Iovanna (this is written in Russian on my father’s baptismal certificate, but they didn’t write her maiden name down. Darn it!) If anyone can give me some idea where to start on this journey, I would be most grateful. All best wishes SallyEllen R.
