I could use some advice. I have done most of my research in PA, NY and the New England states. I am now focusing on NJ as my gg-grandfather was born and raised there. Here is some basic information: David W. McKEAN, born abt. 1812 in NJ, moved to Mercer County, PA in 1833. He married Rachel SIMPSON abt. 1837 in Wolfe Creek, Mercer County, PA. They had 5 children together: Sarah Jane, Jotham, Matilda, Ann Eliza, Melissa. Rachel SIMPSON was living in New Providence, NJ with her family. I believe they moved to Mercer County in 1832. Rachel's sister Charity married Jonathan SOPHER in New Providence and Jonathan was born in Newark, Essex County, NJ. He and Charity moved to Wolfe Creek, Mercer County, PA at the same time, abt 1832. Here is were I could use some advise. New Providence resides in Union County but borders Morris, Essex, and Somerset Counties. Where do I start? I am not familiar with the NJ system of record keeping. Should I start at the state archives or start on the county level? I understand the Newark library has great resources. Would it be best to start there? What I am trying to do is narrow down the searching instead of bouncing all over the place. I am hoping someone familiar with the NJ genealogical record systems will direct me to the best place to start the search. Thanks in advance for your help. Ralph Sutton sutton6@earthlink.net
Ralph, Do you know the religon. The Presbyterian's kept pretty good records. The Morris County Library in Hanover and Morristown are good references. I have gotten lots of help with just a phone call. The have done look ups for me without charge. The NJ Archives good to work with too. There is a site called geneologybank.com that has old newspapers. you can run a search on a name to see if they have anything on any of your people. If they do you can subscribe for as little as a month for $20. and may find obits or marriage announcements. Death Certs from the Department of Health Senior Services is now quite pricie at $25 if you know the date. That's why the obit is so good. They just went up in January.
