The NJ State Archives has a conversion chart for the NJ censuses that can narrow down your search if you're looking for someone who lived in Newark and you know their address. The conversion gives you the ward number for the street address (actually a range of wards for longer, more populous streets). Then you can find the proper ward census reel. Since the street address was not provided until the 1905 census (am I right here?) this is of limited value before 1905. So if you use the Newark City Directory for 1915 or 1905 and find your family, you can go to the chart and find the ward for that address. You must however, spin through the ward pages until you find your street. Like I say, it just "narrows" it down for Newark. If you have a resource for other towns' or cities' directories, perhaps they give a ward number within the directory that can be matched to the census reels.
