Hi Beverly: I am a direct descendant of the pioneer Roberts family of Newak, NJ, as apparently, are you. I've studied this family a lot and I detect some confusion in your information. According to what I have learned from various sources (church records, local histories, other descendants) Rebecca Roberts m. John Tompkins was born in 1701. Her parents were Hugh Roberts ll 1667-1738 and his first wife Martha---------?-1723. I think that the will that mentions Rebecca's children was that of Hugh Roberts II. It gets real confusing since several generations of this family had a person named Hugh Roberts. I am descended from several of them. Here's some of my line: 1. Hugh Roberts @1600-1671 m. Mary Calkins 1628=1717 who were among the founders of Newark, NJ. 2. Hugh Roberts II 1667-1738 m. Martha-------?1723 mentioned above. 3. Hugh Roberts III 1696-1776 m. Abigail Browne 1697-1776. 4. Daniel Roberts 1719-1816 m. Mary Campbell 1717-1807 5. Aaron Roberts 1755-1815 m. Elizabeth Hedden 1757-1845 Aaron was an American soldier in the Revolution. and so on............ You can see that the Hugh Roberts III who married Abigail Browne (# 3 above) could not have been the father of Rebecca Roberts m. John Tompkins. I hope this clears things up. Let me know.
