"Jonathan HAMPTON was an Episcopalian, the grandson of Andrew, a Scotch Quaker who came to Elizabethtown and built a brick house in 1696 which became the parsonage for St. John's after 1749. Part of the building is still standing. Jonathan established the first Masonic Temple in Elizabethtown in 1762 and became the first master. Although he was a surveyor and land speculator he owned a prosperous coach & harnessmaking business."
