Thanks a lot, Lise >> Lise, Sorry, but the 1870 has no index - it is completely listed by wards - you can find out more about which census' have soundex listings at - http://www.nara.gov/publications/microfilm/census/census.html If you look at the street address listed for your ancestor, you will be able to determine which ward it was in by looking in the beginning of the directory where it lists the street names (although some of the older directories do not list them) or you can try -http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~geishome/ Glenn has provided many of the wards for 1870 on his Newark page.
