    3. Hi, I'm new to this list and would like to know if anyone can give me tips on what kind of resources I might be able to use to find information on my GGG-grandfather who supposedly lived, married, and died in or near Newark in the late 1700's. I have been unable to find anything in the online resources I have looked at (such as the NJ Marriage index), and I get the feeling that there maybe aren't a lot of easily accessed records from this period. Here's what I know from handed-down family stories: Peter SMITH, b. ? in Scotland. Was a British soldier (don't know when). Married Eleanor CARTER of Newark (don't know when, but probably late 1780's?). They had a son, Nicholas, born Sept. 14, 1790. Peter drowned in the Passaic River in 1792. According the Essex Co. website, there are no state vital records before 1848. Any suggestions on how to proceed? Thanks very much, Jerry Smith ----- Jerry Smith Northern Marianas College jerryfs@saipan.com
