I would start by getting a copy of his death certificate. Sometimes they are more specific about birthplaces other than just the country. Also, frequently on death certificates there is immigration information. If you can narrow down the year of his marriage request a copy of the Marriage certificate. This also has birth information and frequently has information on parents too. NJ only charges $4.00 for most vital records and they have a downloadable form online at http://www.state.nj.us/health/vital/vital.htm There is also additional information here about other types of records and where to send for them.
