Shawn Thanks so much for the reminder about the NJ Digital Highway... Unfortunately, I tried to find it today - and it seems to have hit a pothole! It is (according to a cached page) "Offline from 9am - 5pm 3/7/2007 for software upgrades." So - for anyone trying to find it today - try again tonight or tomorrow! Regards, Joan Joan M. Michelle Chubenko posted this info over on the NJGEN list and I thought many of you here might find it interesting. Nice to see more NJ images being posted on the web. Shawn List Admin THE NJ DIGITAL HIGHWAY http://www.njdigitalhighway.org/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Quoting from their site, "The New Jersey Digital Highway is your "one stop shop" for New Jersey history and culture, from the collections of NJ libraries, museums, archives and historical societies." While some counties that I checked have no material available (Warren, Sussex, Hunterdon), others like Atlantic and Hudson have thousands of digitized items online. You can check your county using their browse by county feature: http://www.njdigitalhighway.org/browse/map.php Or, you can perform keyword searches using the boolean search engine: http://www.njdigitalhighway.org/search/index.php While not everything online is genealogical in nature, the variety in content is amazing. Happy searching!! Shell NJGenWeb ASC Warren Co. CC, NJGenWeb

Wilson, Yes, I agree it is not the easiest place to do research. I have deed material for the 1800's but not much earlier. In terms of churches, the Hanover Presbyterian Church has been wonderful. Fortunately a few of my folks were members, primarily Aaron Tompkins' daughter, Sarah, and her husband Ezra Beach in the early 1800's. Other Beaches and Morehouses earlier. The first of Aaron's three marriages has been noted at the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown in 1759. I wish I had the same level of information on the Presbyterian church of Caldwell. I think Aaron played a role in that church in 1779, but I haven't located any marriage records. The early records on my Lutheran families in Hunterdon county were certainly more extensive. Thanks for the comments. Beverly ----- Original Message ----- From: Wilson Brown To: Beverly Porter Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2007 2:03 PM Subject: Re: [NJESSEX] Early Wills 18th Century NJ is one of the most difficult areas to research. Both your Roberts and Tomkins families settled near my Brown family, but I have a pile of questions I can't answer. Causes: (1) the deed book (Deed book A) was stolen, destroyed, lost or something, so all the early deeds through 1790 are pretty much lost. An index survives, and often the deeds were cited in later documents, but that is very partial, (2) Often the deeds themselves were never registered anyway, (3) The early Congregational turned Presbyterian churches would only baptize children of their communicants, who were a restricted group who could somehow demonstrate that they were among the Chosen. (4) Very few old church records remain in any case, but you may luck out if you are after a Dutch family because the Dutch Reformed Church kept records and many of their records were preserved (Belleville or 2nd River). (5) The custom of writing in Bibles is mostly from the late 18th and 19th centuries. Unless the family has reconstructed the past, you are out of luck. My grandfather James J. Hesson lived on 144 SValley Rd in West Orange NJ. My grandmother Winifred died of cancer in 1929. She died at her sister's house (Claire Boyle Jehle). My uncle Georgie committed suicide in 1935 because according to a cousin he got in with the Irish mafia and was caught and put in jail where he committed suicide. John Hesson who was married to Viola Ekborn at the time took in William who was 15. John's own children were John R, WilliamV and Eileen Grace Hesson. John in 1930 lived at 842 19th St in Newark. He was in WWI and marched in Newark when he returned. My grandmother's sister Mary Ellen Underwood also lived in Newark at 120 Harrison St in 1930. They were all Catholic. I have not been able to locate William V, John R or Eileen. My father said at one time that there was something about Georgie Hesson in the newspaper but the Newark Public library seemed to have nothing. If anyone has any ideas on how I can get more information about my ancestors, let me know. Winnie
