Dan, By the way, I may be making a trip home to NJ in July. I don't know if I'll get to Holy Sepulchre on that trip but if I do I will look for your plots and if I find headstones I'll take some digital pictures for you. Dan, Jack is exactly right. And the Saints Sections are the oldest sections in the cemetery. Walking around you will see lots of areas with no headstones. But according to staff the Saints sections are completely full. Just some people could not afford headstones including some of my ancestors who are in the row called St Kevins. I hate to sound like a broken record but have your relatives call the cemetery office ahead of time, set a time for them to go there, and they will have a grounds keeper take them out to the exact plot. That's how I found my St. Kevins plot. I would never have figured it out without their help. <Dolores Brown wrote> I guess you can wait until there are no >workers around and take all the pictures you want. It's a big place so >they can't be in every place at the same time. As I and many others have indicated, we've had good experiences with staff at Holy Sepulchre. But you can see that many have had not so pleasant experiences. And I think that can be said about any cemetery we go to. I would caution though that if anyone does decide to go to Holy Sepulchre and try to avoid the workers (or any cemetery for that matter) that you are accompanied by someone else. A friend or family member. The more the better. Please do not go alone. I have been to Holy Sepulchre about 6 or 7 times over the past six year and I've never had a problem. Each time I've gone with my wife. A couple of times my 3 year old daughter had tagged along. But I've always stopped into the office to let them know we were there. On one occasion when one of the grounds keepers was showing me around I told him I wanted to go over to a section where I knew my great-grandfather is buried. When I told him the section he got concerned and told me that it was not a good area to go to. He actually sent a truck and two of his employees to escort me and they sat in their vehicle next to my rental car, wife and daughter and kept an eye on them while I went over and documented my gravesite. In big city cemeteries the workers know what is safe and where you need to be careful. Just be cautious and try to use the staff. There's a bad apple in every company. Don't let one supposed worker turn you off to using them. Just my 2 cents. Shawn List Admin/Moderator

Could the restriction on taking photos of headstones be due to unscrupulous people using the information to get SS cards and other ID information? Seems to me I read that somewhere.
Hello All, I am in no way defending the Holy Sep. people but they did have a serious problem with grave robber's believe it or not. Some of the Cript's were broken into and the body's taken a couple of year's ago, one of them was a father of someone I work with. As to the peope being very friendly I have never met anyone there who was very helpful. The 1st time I went there the 1st response I got was there a $25 charge just to look up each name aand even then the women didn't want to help. Kevin J. Hi Everyone I live in Georgia and I contacted Holy Sepulchre Cem find out if I could send a disposable camera in a SASE and would they so kind to take pictures of some graves that they located for me. I was told that this was a very large cemetery & it would be wise to have someone with me. I must say that she was so very kind and said that there was no need for me to send a camera as they have a digital camera they keep in the office as many people request photos & the fact that I lived so far away. I was told that she would give the grounds keeper the information and have him take the pictures and she will send them to me no charge. Maybe these men were not employees
A few years ago I wrote to Evergreen and asked if I were to send them a disposable camera with return postage, would someone be able to take a photo or 2 of a certain gravestone. They replied that the fee would be $40! I passed. Cee
Unfortunately, some individuals tend to become intoxicated with a small sip of authority. We have all encountered them in our quest for ancestors! How does photography damage a headstone? I'm sure Grandpa Moses and his widow (who probably paid for the monument) would object. How on earth can a cemetery enforce this policy? Is the perpetrator subject to arrest, a beating or confiscation of the camera? A lawyer could have a field day! I am generally respectful, but do not follow rules that are nonsense. And yes, I bring my own popcorn to the theatre! Beverly G. Holy Sepulchre has always had the most responsive and helpful group of people of all the cemeteries in which I have researched. I have been there a number of times (not in the past 3 years), and have taken many pictures of many stones, including ones not my own, as "locators". So I hate to put forth this suggestion. I wonder if perhaps the men in trucks are looking for a bit of palm greasing. Perhaps they are not the fellows of old who were so helpful. Although the area is not the safest, the number of "weirdos" who might engage in grave photographing seems to me to be miniscule. What other reason might there be..........and there certainly was no sign in the front forbidding photography when I was there. I had been to the cemetery before and had non-digital photos on a sunny day with shadows from trees obscuring the lettering on the stones. So over the winter, I waited for an overcast day. I remembered that one grave was on the outer perimeter of the section, but the section was large. The first truck of employees were nice and helped me locate the actual grave. They left. There are a few stones at this grave, so I took out my camera and started taking the group picture and then the individual stone pictures. That's when another employee pulled up in a truck and said that pictures aren't permitted, that there is a sign posted at the entrance. I said that I did not see such a sign and that the stones belong to my family and we would like pictures. He stood there while I finished "to make sure" that I didn't take pictures of any other stones. He explained that the policy was to "keep weirdos out." There are other family members buried in other sections and I wanted their pictures also, but I left because I didn't want him following me and harassing me about the pictures.

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. Hi Everyone, I've been on this list a long time, rarely post a message, but this one really got to me. I've never heard of such a thing......... not being allowed to take photos. I know some cemeteries don't want people to do gravestone rubbings, but a harmless photo??? Did those employees off an explanation as to the reason? I hope you got your photo anyhow. Mary- Since you live in Wisconsin, I'm not sure if you're aware of the significance of the Mravlag surname within Elizabeth, N.J. The present Mravlag Manor(built in 1930's?)as subsidized housing. I believe it is still owned by the City of Elizabeth. My understanding is that Dr. Mravlag(Victor?) was a much respected and influential resident of the City. Try the Elizabeth Public Library for family history, City Directories and/or obits. Family name well known in Elizabeth with biographical info. I'm certain a few other list members are knowledgable re: Mravlag. The clerical staff at Evergreen Cemetery are people who have lived most of their lives in the Elizabeth and Newark area. They're probably familiar with the Mravlag name. Arm yourself with as much family history as you can to establish your connection to Elizabeth, N.J. and the Mravlag name. Then call the office and engage them in conversation re: request for burial info. They receive many written requests from individuals across the U.S. Save time and possibly get more info. if you establish a verbal contact with them. susan ---- Original Message ----- From: <LMJack15@aol.com> To: <njessex@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 08, 2007 7:40 PM Subject: Re: [NJESSEX] Mravlag naturalization & Evergreen Cemetery > > In a message dated 3/8/2007 4:31:42 P.M. Dan, The other response was pretty good. If you are standing at the main entrance to the cemetery and walk straight in....you will walk into six sections referred to as the 'Saints Sections' --- each section is broken down into paths and each path is labeled with a Saints name. Thats all that is on the small map I received from the office staff.
